Immersive environments for visionOS

Today, we have a pre-alpha version of Infuse 8.3 which includes the first version of immersive environments.

This is a very early build with many unfinished pieces, but if you are interested in testing this please drop me a PM.

Just sent you a PM!

I’ve been testing the immersive environment feature on Infuse 8.3 (pre-alpha) and it’s a great start! A few thoughts:

  • What’s the difference between the ā€œDistanceā€ and ā€œScaleā€ sliders? Adjusting these sliders seems to do the same thing (makes the screen appear larger or smaller). I assume the function of the ā€œScaleā€ slider will become more obvious when there are more detailed environments available (not just pure black).
  • When you first enable the immersive environment, the view often appears off-center. It seems like the environment is being centered to where your eyes are focused when you select the ā€œISā€ button. And because that button is on the left of the playback control bar, the environment initially appears shifted left of where my eyes are naturally looking. So the first thing I have to do is hold down the digital crown to recenter my view.
  • When bringing up the playback controls, my preference would be for them to appear and remain centered directly under the video. Currently, the playback controls seem to appear wherever your eyes are focused, which oftentimes is off-center. I don’t know of any other video app on Vision Pro that does this.
  • Some videos (particularly those with Dolby Vision) appear to stutter for a few seconds after first enabling the immersive environment. Doesn’t seem to happen with non-DV files. They smooth out after 5 seconds or so.
  • You know what would go great with this new immersive environments feature? Support for 3D video playback!

I agree with point 1 - but I suspect it is an artifact of the background being plain black. I do like the controls being sliders to give fine grain control - not something I have seen alternative players such as Moon Player providing.

I have not seen point 2 and 3 - but maybe I was just not looking closely enough.

Another point is that as far as I can see the immersive environment only works in the vertical plane. I could not see a way to change this - I often am lying down looking at the ceiling so would like this to be possible. This may be a limitation of it being an early alpha release?

Normally in immersive environments the screen is in a fixed position. The Scale attribute makes no sense. You just need distance, height, and possibly angle. If the intention is having black void as an immersive environment, ok, but the minute you construct a setup like a theater, Scale has no place in it.

I imagine that scale and distance work the same way as a camera would. You can move closer to your subject (distance) or you can use a zoom lens (scale). Each one has different impacts to field of view, depth of field, and perspective.

Scale in immersive makes the whole scene bigger, if you’re in an environment with seats they’ll become gigantic.

Please let me test the 8.3! Thanks

I would love to test version 8.3 on my Vision Pro

PM dropped, thanks for this :+1:

now that I’m back to a proper network connection, happy to test it on vision pro too!

If there a place in this forum to add feedback for this version? I checked under Beta Feedback but there is no 8.3 Vision OS one. I did send some emails though.

Not that I know of  I guess this may be because the current build is not even officially at the alpha stage.

hoping we get an updated build soon to see how the immersive support is progressing.

You can share feedback in this thread if you like.

Supercut is an example of an app with a great 3rd party theater that closely mirrors the Apple TV built-in theater which is the best-in-class. That would be a great option to have, and would be sufficient for my use. A black void (currently in Infuse) is a worst-case scenario for immersive environments (reflections, for one being the biggest problem) so looking forward to seeing what else you guys come up with!

Yes I agree, the Apple TV built-in theater and Supercut theater are the best for me. They are the best at reducing the lens glare because of the clever use of reflections on the floor/ceiling. Some other apps I use have the fancy theaters with seats etc, but there is just too much glare. Also, the fans often start to spin up and as the processor struggles, there is motion judder/stutter….. maybe this is due to the rendering of the theater seats and screen etc…

I would suggest to keep it simple as per the above.

Wrong, IMAX theater environment in the official IMAX app for non 3d content is the best one I found so far followed by the theater environment in the Cine Ultra app. If Infuse can add the IMAX environment then it tops all the apps available now.
