I need to make a decision, please your help

Infuse

I’ve been a VLC user for a very long time. I recently discovered Infuse and thought it was great but I really dislike the subscription model.

Long story short, I did my research and I love Infuse features, I thought I was ok with the annual subscription and I am now on my free trial.

This is the point where I discovered that Infuse can’t handle AV1 files well enough. Nor can it handle VP9 files well.

At first I thought “sure there’s an issue with the files”, but guess what, my VLC handled them perfectly.

So now I’m wondering if I’ll be spending my money on some shiny whistles when VLC can actually handle ANY file.

Has anybody had any issues with files that Infuse can’t handle but VLC can??

For clarification:
My issue was with 2 types of file.
av1 in webM
vp9 in webM
I’m using an ipad with the latest OS.
Infuse was able to open the file, but it didn’t allow to use the seek bar, nor skip ahead, or do anything within the videos. Any attempt to touch anything within the videos would return them to the beggining.

What iPad do you have?

iPad 10th gen. And also an 8th

I have those, however, any argument about the device is meaningless when VLC can perform perfectly fine on the same device under the same conditions.

If you’re able to send in a sample video you are seeing issues with it could be helpful in tracking down what’s going on here.

As an aside, newer Apple devices (A17/M3 and later) include HW decoding of AV1 videos, and AFAIK Infuse is the only player that currently supports this. This of course won’t help with your current devices, but if you were to upgrade to a newer device at some point HW decode would provide much improved playback compared to the SW decode Infuse (and VLC) use on older devices.

VP9 video is still limited to SW decode on all devices, unless you are YouTube which gets a special exception from Apple.

Thank you for your input, but I believe if VLC can handle the file well, a subscription app should be able to do the same on the same device.

I’ll send the file, no problem.

I’ve sent the video, thanks.

For me AV1 videos play perfectly fine on all our devices (iPhones, iPads and Apple TVs of various generations). Sure it’s software decoding, but then again dav1d is an amazing decoder!

Thank you for your reply, I find it strange, I thought it was a file issue, but why would VLC play it perfectly?

I think you will only find out if you hand in a video sample as suggested.

Yeah I’ve sent the file

Thank you for your help, were you able to open the file with Infuse?

I’m currently on my free trial, could that be the reason my Infuse can’t handle some files that VLC handles perfectly?

Isn’t the free trial a full featured trial? Anybody else having issues?

My apple subscriptions show that I’m currently on Pro and it shows my renewal date, so I don’t think there’s any issue there.

So I’m guessing you couldn’t open the video with infuse but you could do it with free VLC. And thatks why you jever replied.

I couldn’t get an answer from this forums, but what I did get was spam email, sending me “forum highlights” and stuff.

Ikm sticking with free open source VLC. Thanks.

Just because the developer didn’t reply within 13 days or so doesn’t mean he’s deliberately ignoring you. This forum has plenty of people asking questions and it’s possible he’s just forgotten or hasn’t found the time.

As for the E-Mails, most forums do this now. You can easily unsubscribe with the “To unsubscribe from these emails, click here” link at the bottom of every E-Mail.

Update: I saved the video to my dropbox, just to back it up, and guess what, even dropbox can play the video without any issues! Wow!! I was just backing it up without thinking about testing that when I realized the dropbox app plays videos, I opened it directly and WOW!! The dropbox iOS app can handle a video that the Pro version of Infuse can not.
