I have questions regarding streaming speed

Hi.

My setup is:
M3 iMac
External HDD (Intenso 2.5 Memory Case 4TB Micro-USB USB-version 3.1 (3.2 Gen 2)) connected to a thunderbolt 3 port.
Asus RT-AX58U (wifi 6)
Apple TV4K (3rd gen)

My iMac and AppleTV is wireless, running a cable is not an option.

I have Infuse on my AppleTV and have configured SMB on my iMac.
Streaming stuff from my iMac to my AppleTV works well, but when I stream those big files (10 bit remux files that’s 50gb to 100gb in size) things gets bad.

I can usually watch a few min, then the movie buffers a few min, and then I can watch for 5 min, then some more buffering.

I usually have those big files on the external HDD, but even if I have it on the iMac the problem persists.

I have tried the speed test in infuse.
I get around 65-70 Mbps from the external HDD and I get around 70-75 Mbps from my internal storage on my iMac.

I´m not really knowledgeable when it come to these things. Is there something I can do to make it go faster? Ive tried changing QoS on the router but that didn’t really do anything.
Getting a faster external HDD won’t do anything as I still would get around 70 Mbps from the iMac to the AppleTV.

If I use an Ethernet cable things works just fine, but I really don’t wanna use a cable (difficult and ugly).

What can I do?

You may find some help in the users guide trouble shooting section for SMB here.

You may want to try switching to FTP and compare the speeds.

The speeds you’re seeing are on the low side so maybe the trouble shooting section can get you where you need to be.

Sounds like wifi is the problem. Run Infuse speed test with ethernet cable connected. To improve Infuse speed test on wifi, try relocating router and/or ATV. Remove or relocate obstructions. Try a different wifi channel.

Not necessarily, could be an SMB3 issue. That’s why the link to the trouble shooting page and the suggestion for FTP test.

the OP said they’ve already done this and it works.

So, what I did was download a simple FTP server (‎FTP Server i Mac App Store ) to see if it was the SMB that was bad.

I tried the FTP server and I got 230 mbps from an external HDD and 300 from the iMac itself.

So that would probably work streaming even the biggest of files

Is there a better FTP Server out there (not necessarily a complex one), the one I tried with is to simple.

Did you try setting the SMB to 2?

No, it was simply SMB (as its recommended I believe?)
Thats auto, right?

Sometimes Auto selects SMB3 which is technically the “best” but it may have too much overhead to work reliably. That’s why it also says that selecting SMB2 may be a better option and even give legacy a try.

Ill try it and report back

Same as before, no difference.

Also, you don’t need any additional software to use FTP, Mac can use FTP natively.

I think they have removed the built in FTP server. There used to be a choice for it, I remember, but now I can’t find it. Im on Sequoia
