How can people be advertising Untethered ATV2 on Ebay if it is not possible?

Hi

I’ve almost given up waiting for a solution to have my Apple TV 2 untethered with the iOS5.

I started looking for a replacement on Ebay after accidentally updating to 5.0 without first saving 4.4.4 SHSH Blobs.  Typical mistake for someone new to this stuff I suppose.

There are people offering untethered ATV2 but they are asking stupid money.

My problem is I do not have a PC anywhere near my TV and switch off all sockets every night.  It’s OK doing it for a day or so but then I got bored.

Can anyone tell me is it possible and, if so, how to jailbreak an ATV2 untethered with 5.0 installed?

I do have some SHSH blobs saved but they are older than 4.4.4.  Is it possible if I downgrade to any of those?

Please help.

I see that SP 0.8.4 has had support added for 5.0 but it states tethered.  Wasn’t that supported over a month ago anyway?

Hoping someone can clear this mess up in my head!!!

Thanks.

It’s still tethered for 5.0 what you are probably seeing apple tv 2 4.4.4 untethered and the reason it’s stupid money just due to the fact apple tv 2 isint made any more an no one knows when apple tv 3 will be jailbroken ever

Thanks for your reply.

To be honest, I tried about a month ago to do it with 4.4.4 and still couldn’t get it to work untethered.  After that, I accidentally upgrade to 5.0!!

Yes it is possible to downgrade un-tethered, what version SHSH blobs do you have saved for the unit??

I’d have to check.

Somewhere I am sure that I read that it was possible to stitch SHSH blobs from one unit to another.  I have a few Apple TV’s in our house.

good luck!

The only success that I have seen doing this uses a vey complicated procedure, and even then only results in a tethered jailbreak so has no real advantage over the tethered jailbreak of 5.0 that is easier to do.

You can take a unit back with saved older blobs for that unit, people do it all the time, but stitching blobs blobs from one unit to the other is prolly not going to happen. I know I’ve read on here someone saying they have succeeded in doing so, but I think it was never confirmed on an ongoing basis with multiple units and various members doing it.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong because I need to take a couple of units backwards and have many blobs saved from other units.

If you are having trouble with Sn0wbreeze in iFaith mode to go back to 4.4.4, I would say just stay tethered with 5.  I’m not sure what the big deal is with tethered v untethered.  How often to you pull the power on your ATV?

Of course if you want to send me your ATV and SHSH blobs, I’ll happily fix your box for a fee.  ;-) j/k

Every night!  I’ve given up on it.

You’re the MAN!

I know someone who has done it BUT…

He won’t tell me how as he has a business selling jailbroken Apple TV’s.  He wants to sell me one but he want £200+ for it.  Money I ain’t got.

I said to him it’s not possible but he just grins at me knowingly.

I think he must have dragged some different files over in Total Commander as well.  Has anyone experimented with this or does it just brick the unit in one fell swoop?

Curious why? The box goes to sleep on its own.  No need to pull the power.  Do you live in a dorm and have to put away all your gear every night?

Nothing like that. I’m just an Eco-freak. My friends would simply call me a miser.

I switch off every plug in the house before I go to sleep. 1) because my electrics are ancient and dodgy 2) it saves a lot of money over the year.

 2) how much  ?

P.S.  ATV2 ‘‘eats’’ 6W .

  So 6Wx24hx365days= 52560W =  52,5kW  per annum.

Now multiply 52,5 with cost of 1kW/h in your area and please post a result.

I knew someone would not think it through laterally and post a response like this.  I just didn’t expect it to be someone as wise as you, Ormanton!

I am not talking about saving energy on an Apple TV.  I switch off everything and I have the TV, players, etc, etc, etc, etc all on one extension - the same extension to which the ATV2 is plugged into.

The most important thing that you seem to have missed is that safety is more important than perhaps the annual energy saving. :-X

And BTW, it’s still nearly £9 a year.  Money better off in my pocket than an electric company’s.

I save on average 4 - 5kWh per day on not having  everything running overnight.  I use only 10kWh of electricity per day and I run two computers for 12 hours a day, printers, etc, etc..

That represents 5kWh / 24 hour x 365.25 days which equals £292.20 per annum.  Now that’s worth saving, isn’t it?

Anyway, I thought this forum was for ATV advice not lifestyle choices interrogation?

I was just curious, for how much £ per day you are plugging/unplugging   cabble  and booting ATV2.

So it is £0.02 per day.

I would not worry about tether or untehter boot for 2pence per day. No meanings mate.

In my opinion this device is green and eco friendly enough to leave it plugged in.

Good luck, keep green.

I agree.

I have a lot of sympathy for those who want to power off unused devices, but when in the case of the ATV2 the penalty is having to do a tethered boot I definitely think it is not worth it (and anyway what is the cost of powering on the PC/Mac to do the tethered boot).   I also strongly suspect that the stand-bye power useage may be less than the 6W quoted so that the monetary cost is not as high as that quoted.

Sorry.  I should have made myself clearer.  We only have one socket near to it and that has an extension with 6 hungry items plugged in.  As I did say before though, the wiring is ropey and I still actually have cotton braided sheath wiring in certain parts of the house (original from god knows when?  1908 when the house was built?)  Anyway, I should be overloading the circuitry.

I’m saving money for the rewire!!!  Price goes up every year though so I hoping to get to a stage where the electricity companies are charging so much that the rewire pays for itself with the savings on 5kWh per day.  I truly hate spending money.

I would agree with you if it was just the Apple TV.  Perhaps now I’ve saved enough money I should go out and buy some sockets and self-install (possibly illegal to do in the UK I believe).

itimpi. Next problem is how do I get an HDMI cable long enough to go from one room (where PC is located) to the room with the TV in?  Or am I missing something?  Last time I moved the pc through and it was a right PIA and it is not something I would do every day or even want to do once a month to be truthfully honest.

It was for this sort of reason I was assuming you want to leave the ATV2 powered on as the tethered boot is such a nuisance in this type of scenario. Hopefully soon we will have an untethered boot available soon which will make things much better for you.
