HLG on 3rd gen ATV 4K

My HTPC plays the same file as HDR10, with MPC-HC / MPC Video renderer / LAV Filters.
My LG OLED plays the file as “true” HLG HDR.
Plex, Infuse and VLC on Apple TV 4K 2nd and 3rd gen, plays it as 4k SDR.

I have some HLG files created by DJI Mavic 2 Pro. In Apple TV 4K 2021, the files are not switching to HDR mode. Do we have any luck with ATV 4K 2021 model?

I am very much interested in that too

Updated app today, but no HLG–>HDR10 conversion yet. :frowning:

Because HLG has not yet been declared as a feature in a future infuse update.
You can follow the news about HLG here - Upcoming Features (updated 12/7/22)

No mention of HLG at all there. Upcoming Features (updated 12/7/22)

While it may not be listed in the upcoming features thread what’s more important is that this thead is marked as planned.

With only one “like” I’d guess it’s not a burning hot item but when it’s tagged planned it may be one of those items that gets rolled into an update as time allows.

Hang in there, the devs look to have their hands full with so many OS changes as well as new hardware compatibility issues that it may take a bit.

I wasn’t trying to be either cheeky or rude, I just read what Axl2021 wrote: " You can follow the news about HLG here". So I believed the thread he linked to, had some news about HLG…
No, it’s not the most important, but I would love a HLG-HDR10 conversion at least, so the BBC iPlayer series can shine in Infuse on ATV… MPC HC with K-lite codecs does so in W11, but there I don’t have Spatial surround with Airpods Max…

I gave you a website page where they write about all future new infuse functions and bug fixes. As soon as you see HLG there, you can wait for the release. Until this word appears there, you can not wait in the very near future and not wonder why everything does not work in the new update HLG

@James any news since November?

I’m assuming anything earlier than the 3rd gen ATV 4K can’t play HLG files natively?

Are either of the 1st or 2nd Gen ones capable of playing them by being converted to standard HDR “on the fly”?

I use latest Infuse and when play a Video with HLG, this not work. It’s a TV series from BBC and BBC use HLG for HDR content, but latest Infuse play only in SDR. Any solution?

Native HLG support has been added in today’s 7.5.2 update.

HLG is supported on most modern Apple devices, including:

  • 2021+ Apple TV (or later)
  • iPhone 12 (or later)
  • 5th gen iPad Pro (or later)
  • MacBook Pro introduced in 2018 (or later)
  • MacBook Air introduced in 2018 (or later) (HDR on external displays requires a model with Apple silicon)
  • iMac introduced in 2020 (or later), plus iMac Pro
  • Mac mini introduced in 2018 (or later)
  • Mac Pro introduced in 2019
  • Mac Studio

Doesn’t seem to be working correctly on an Apple TV 4K (2nd generation).

HLG is now flagged as HDR when previously it was SDR, but it is sent as HDR10 BT.2020 which is incorrect and not native HLG output.

I have no idea if this ATV will actually output HLG though as no other apps support it that I am aware of.

I think this is what the Infuse devs intend. I don’t think Apple TV has the ability to trigger HLG, but an oversimplified way to think about this is that Infuse is “decoding” the HLG to HDR10.

Correct. I don’t believe the ATV currently has a dedicated HLG output mode (there is also nothing like this you can manually switch to in the Settings area) so HLG will output as HDR now, instead of SDR like before.

Fair enough, add it to list of things for Apple to support.

The use of the word “native HLG support” is what threw me as it’s not really the case.

Sorry for the confusion.

‘Native’ in this sense refers to how the video is processed on the device. Previously it was non-native since there was no real support for HLG (until recently) so everything was being tone-mapped to SDR.

This is great! Thanks for the update, and I’m looking forward to test it. On vacation, and away from my ATV and OLED now :sunny:
