HDR metadata not correct, replaced by standard values

We’ve been looking into a few leads here, but nothing to report just yet.

Quite some time has passed. Do you have any news regarding this?

I just noticed the following when playing local rips through Infuse:

When played via Infuse (MaxCLL/MaxFLL):

Blade Runner 2049 - 4000/1000
Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 - 4000/1000
How To Train Your Dragon: Hidden World - 4000/1000
Ready Player One - 4000/1000
Godzilla: King of the Monsters - 4000/1000

When viewing codec information of each movie via VLC (MaxCLL/MaxFLL):

Blade Runner 2049 - 4000/0.0050
Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 - 1000/0.0050
How To Train Your Dragon: Hidden World - 1000/0.0050
Ready Player One - 4000/0.0050
Godzilla: King of the Monsters - 4000/0.0050

It seems like everything being streamed locally via Infuse is fixed at 4000/1000 regardless of the movie being played.

This forces me to choose different settings for HDR Levels, within my projector’s (JVC DLA-NX7) HDR settings for each movie.

Shouldn’t Infuse just output whatever the movie’s metadata states?

I remember reading from older posts that this was some sort of Apple limitation on the Apple TV.

Hi,

First af all, congratulations for your great job, Infuse is in the top of all multimedia applications.

I’m in a intensive research to decide to buy or not an Apple TV 4K (instead a Shield Pro).

I was reading a several old post in a few forums (including this community) about the issue with the values for maxcll/maxfall which apple set at 4000/1000 by default and doesn’t allow to modify in the API for custom player.

I lost the track of the issue in the middle of 2020 and i would like to know if it’s solved in the latest versions or not. If the answer is not, how is the impact for oled vs led.

Sorry if I’m replicating some explained doubt but I’m not able to find an answer.

Thnak you so much

Here is the original thread. Doesn’t look light any progress.

If you want 4K UHD Dolby vision and Dolby Atmos then Apple TV is not going to provide that.

But otherwise infuse is great. I use it for everything SD and HD. Haven’t jumped to the 4K bandwagon yet on a media box. Even if I got something like a shield I would continue using infuse and my Apple TV as I syncs with all my other devices and the interface and playback is great.

I do have a 4K Apple and an Lg OLED and haven’t noticed any issues personally but I’m not an expert and I’m not sure I would be able to tell unless someone showed me.

Hi munpip214,

Thanks for your answer.

Exactly this is the topic that I was reading, the last reply is from 20 March.

I do agree with you, I’ve a ATV HD too and I’m very happy with them, the UI is fantastic.

But for me, overall, the most important thing is the video/audio quality, specially, with UHD movies.

I know that this problem is most relevant in OLEDs because they’re more aggresive using tone mapping and ABL. Reduce the brightness because don’t know the real nits of the movie, I guess to avoid clipping and burn risk.

I would like to know if it’s a big problem in led like my Q90R that don’t have ABL.

It seems Apple is tweaking some things in tvOS 14.5 with regard to video output, as they’ve replaced the 23.976 Hz option with 24.000. I can’t imagine they plan to leave 23.976 out of the final release, but it’s possible they are working to add other options as well.

FWIW, I checked today in tvOS 14.5 beta 1, and MaxCLL/MaxFLL are still set to fixed values. We’re keeping an eye on this though.

Hi James,

Thanks so much for your detailed reply.

It’s sad that Apple don’t do anything to solve this kind of issues. It’s not a big deal for them, only allow to send a few parameters in a API, :(.

It’s frustrating because limit the great work that developers like you do.

In my case, despite being a big fun of apple, they push me to buy a Nvidia shield instead ATV.

Hi all,

I stumbled upon this thread from another thread where I wanted to compare Infuse with Oppo video quality. I did a comparison. I took a frame from an MKV rip of Philadelphia 4K and tried matching the scenes on both Infuse and my Oppo. To my eyes, both on my screen and from the photos I took I can see no visible difference. Of course, a photo taken with an iPhone from a screen will not show all the small details, but still, I find it very hard to find any noticeable difference in quality:

The first one is from Infuse:

The second is from Oppo:

Any thoughts?

Hi Joanyb,

The movie is in 4k HDR? The problem in not with standard 4k stuff.

If it’s not 4K HDR. Please, could you test the demo chasing the light from Samsung??

In this video from a youtube channel, they show the diference between ATV4K and Nvidia Shield.

Sorry is in spanish but is easy to follow. You can see the diference in sunflowers scene.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Thanks! The file is in HDR and both Apple TV and Oppo are outputting HDR. I cannot really test the Samsung video on my Oppo, since it doesn’t have a YouTube player.

I did some further tests using Aquaman, also UHD with HDR and using scenes with a lot of contrast (high brights and low darks), and could not find any visual difference whatsoever when switching from Infuse/AppleTV to my Oppo. Could it have to do with my display? I have a Sony OLED. I understood that OLED’s are particularly prone to this issue, but I cannot see any difference. A couple more screenshots below.

Oppo:

Hi Joanyb,

Thanks for your test, very useful.

As you said, oled should be more sensitive to this issue with maxcll/maxfll. Anyway, each brand mane the tone mappinf in a diferent way, Sony usuaally clip the hijgs and focus in reproduce goog blacks.
In your case, if the issue is noticiable, would be more noticiable in highlights than dark scenes.

it seems from your test that the diference is not really a big deal, even a little one. But if you want to be totally sure, try with scene with a lot of white or bright colours.

Regards and thank so much for your help. You have a great stuff to do this test.

Any news on this? My LG B8 OLED use these values for tone mapping.

Yes, big issue with LG OLED TVs…

I found a sample, that triggers the maxCLL / maxFALL (1015/241) on the latest 14.5 beta!

With Plex, still 4000/1000.

I found the difference with my HDfury Integral 2:

When Infuse sends the correct metadata:
MTR: DCI-P3 D65

When sends 4000/1000:
MTR: BT2020 D65

@james Can you implement this feature when the SMPTE ST 2086 mastering display color volume SEI info represents BT.2020? About 99% of movies of this type.
