HDR looks Flat on Vision Pro in Immersive (elevated blacks)

This was mentioned in the beta many times but I think now that Immersive have been released maybe it deserves its own post.

HDR images when going immersive look flat and blacks seem elevated.

I hope this doesn’t suffer the fate of so many other important issues reported that have been ignored for years!

Can you explain it more? It looks flat compared to other vision apps?

Edit: Did some testing with Alien Romulus. Can’t see a difference between my Apple TV Version and the one I play on infuse (uhd backup with dv 8.1). Or did you mean with “HDR looks flat” just content with HDR layer, no dolby vision?

Contrast is low (that’s a term for flat) highlights are low as well. Just compare it with other apps in Vision Pro, such as CineUltra.
BTW, this problem wasn’t present until VisionOS26, before HDR rendered fine, even better than in CineUltra.

Ok, I own the avp since visionos26, so don’t know how it has been before.

But right now I can’t see any difference between Apple Cinema and Infuse in contrast and HDR highlights, when I watch the same movies on both apps. Need to check Cine Ultra though. Maybe Cine Ultras output isn’t accurate? Can you name a good movie (scene) to test it?

I think it’s you. If you watched HDR for a while you can tell. Also, black levels are elevated.

I compared CineUltra with Infuse on an iPad Pro and blacks levels and contrast are the same (iPad is brighter because of tech)

I just watched Dune: Part Two using Infuse, the Apple TV app, and Cine Ultra, and once again, it seems to me that Cine Ultra doesn’t provide accurate playback. The colors look different, brightness is noticeably higher, but it just doesn’t match what I see in the TV or Infuse app.

I also noticed that the AVP’s fans ramp up quite a bit when using Cine Ultra, which probably indicates that something is being altered in the video stream. With Infuse, the fans stay much quieter.

Maybe @james can comment on this. Accurate, standard-compliant playback is very important to me.

This is my experience too. When the fans spin up using cine ultra it causes motion judder/stutter after a few minutes. I then find it unwatchable. The new enhanced HDR setting is not accurate, everything is over saturated and highlights are blown out.

Infuse seems more accurate to my eyes, although I accept it’s difficult to see the difference between SDR and HDR content. But that is true for Apple TV or Disney+

Infuse has the best motion and the fans don’t spin up, and the new cinema environment is great. If only the grab bar would disappear when using windowed mode!

After a few more tests, I can confirm it again: Cine Ultra does not provide accurate playback in terms of colors, base brightness, or HDR peaks. Details often get lost because the image is completely blown out. For example, in the movie Ballerina (from John Wick), right at the beginning during the father’s conversation with his daughter outdoors, in Cine Ultra, you can’t even make out the clouds properly because the entire sky is just bright.

However, I get the feeling that the image has a bit more punch when you disable Dolby Vision in Infuse, which then uses the HDR fallback instead.

I checked the CineUltra. I don’t notice the blown out issue. I compared the sample (Dolby Vision w/embedded HLG HEVC 60fps (MOV, Photography Blog’s iPhone 13 Pro raw 4K footage)) on Kodi samples. It uses Dolby Vision Profile 8, which is supported by Infuse. The result of CineUltra is similar to what Apple preview, Safari is showing. I don’t notice the blown out even the video peak brightness is at 1000nits. This is probably related to HLG format. Infuse on the other hand seems like only playing in SDR mode(or HDR with limited headroom). I picked the color of the same place on Infuse and CineUltra. Everything appears darker compare to CineUltra.
I suspect to use the full capability of Vision Pro peak brightness it requires some special flag. Because I tried another video with YouTube app from iPad, which definitely not optimized and configured the flag for VisionOS. The HDR is activated, but the brightness is similar to what Infuse is showing. Unlike the YouTube in Safari.

@james BTW, are there any plans to fix the HDR issues on the Vision Pro?
