Frequency Limitation Question

Sorry if this has been asked before, but in the audio guide, it states:

Infuse for Apple TV supports up to 7.1 channels of 24-bit, 48KHz audio.

… and in the FAQ it notes:

LPCM in uncompressed, lossless format which on the Apple TV supports up to 7.1 channels of 24-bit, 48KHz audio.

Is this a limitation of the fact that the AppleTV4k is decoding everything and sending to the receiver as LPCM.

If in tvOS 12.0 they finally enable passthrough within the OS (i.e. to allow ATMOS to work), would there be anything to prevent bitstream of a >48KHz audio file (e.g. 192) from the Apple TV to the receiver to achieve the higher frequency playback?

Yes, higher sample rates should work if/when Apple adds a dedicated passthrough option.

However, most movies and TV shows are mastered at 48KHz anyways, so you’d only see a benefit if the video you are playing has a higher sample rate (mainly concerts and some anime).
