External USB either a) not recognised or b) after switching to external storage won't reboot

Am having major issues getting my atv to work with my 1.5tb external hard drive.

Either the drive is not recognised or if it is and I go to external storage mode, then on the re-boot the atv hangs with screen of white writing about missing keychanis…

I have scoured the forums looking for an answer and have done the following.

Factory reset - Updated the atv software - Rub atvfalsh (and even re-formatted the usb stick and tried again) - RUn smart updater…but this is where the problems start. 

Sometimes I get a partial or install failure, re-run it and get success. I have tried, as per some threads, manually downloaded the OSX combo update and ,oved it via cyberdu k to the documents folder, but smartupdater still downloads it again.

I have tried formatting the external HDD as all of the option available in disk utility.

I am now on attempt 12…

What type of drive are you attempting to use?

Often times drives from WD and Seagate will have pre-installing software that can cause trouble with OS X 10.4 (which the ATV1 runs). The only way to remove this software is to use the tools provided by the manufacturer.

It’s a Samsung.

I couldn’t be arsed with all the hassle in the end, so am now using it as external storage via Nito

However, this is not the solution I was after
