External HD as Primary Drive

I had a quick question about using an external drive as my primary drive:

If I make my external HD my primary drive, and that drive crashes - Will my AppleTV be dead, or would I be able to restore my Apple TV to it’s original settings after the external drive crashes?

Should the external drive crash, the AppleTV can be restored to its factory state.
