Dolby Vision

Is there a way to play back Dolby Vision? I assume it would have to be from an ISO image. I am debating about upgrading for life but just got a new Dolby Vision TV and this would be a nice to have for sure.

No, there’s no way to play those files on the Apple TV in Dolby Vision but they will play as HDR10. The Oppo 203 can play them back, but that’s about it.

But movies bought on iTunes on the aTV are in Dolby Vision.

These videos can be played in Infuse, and will be displayed in HDR10 - which still looks great!

Unfortunately, Dolby does not yet have any tools available that would enable (dual-layer) Dolby Vision to be played on the Apple TV. DV is still somewhat new, so it’s possible they may roll out some tools at some point in the future.

iTunes (and other streaming sources) provide single-layer Dolby Vision, which is a different technical spec from what you find on UHD discs. It’s not currently possible to convert dual-layer DV to single-layer.

Hi James.
I just came across Dolby Vision files (ripped from UHD Blu-Rays I believe) and they are not recognized as HDR.
They just play as SDR files
and don’t look that great at all.

Use mediainfo and post the results. I’m guessing whomever ripped the movies didn’t do it properly.

The LG Dolby Vision trailer plays fine on my LG 55B8S from USB, but Infuse plays it in SDR (no Dolby Vision or HDR logo appears on the TV and the colors pop way less, although the HDR-to-SDR conversion seems accurate).

I believe it should play in HDR.
It is available here: https://4kmedia.org/lg-dolby-vision-uhd-4k-demo/
From the mediainfo, and it I understand well it seems like a single layer Dolby Vision file.
I’ll try to upload a sample form a double layer Dolby Vision file later on today.

.Hi I just uploaded a sample dual layer DV file, as well as the same file with the Dolby Vision layer removed. Audio is out of sync but that is not the issue here.
I believe the file has been muxed with the Dolby MP4 streaming muxer which you can find here: https://github.com/DolbyLaboratories/dlb_mp4base/tree/master/bin

The file is “DV sample.zip”.
The DV file plays as Dolby Vision via USB on my LG B8S TV.
The file with the DV track removed plays as HDR10 on my LG B8S TV via USB.

Via Infuse, the same files play as SDR. I believe they should play as HDR10.

Attached are the MediaInfos for the Dual Layer Dolby Vision sample, and for the file with the Dolby Vision layer removed.
Here for the Dual Layer Dolby Vision sample :

Can you check to ensure the Match Content options are enabled on your Apple TV?

Yes they are.
“Default” is set to 4K Dolby Vision 60Hz.
Both “Mach Dynamic Range” and “Match Frame Rate” are turned on and work well, except for these videos.

James, have you been able to reproduce the issue with the file I uploaded ?

I have the same problem. The problem is only in the new version. Infuse Pro 5.9 DV is OK!

Can you please confirm that ANY Dolby Vision stream will “fallback” to HDR10 with Infuse? My TV set is HDR10 compatible but not DV compatible. Thanks

We have added Dolby Vision support for the upcoming 6.1.4 release.

If you’re interested in trying a beta early, please let me know.

How can i get beta version?

Today’s 6.1.4 update adds support for single-layer Dolby Vision.

Enjoy!

Hello,

I can’t have Dolby Vision on my Panasonic GZ 2000 whereas the files I read on my NAS are all in Dolby Vision. Why ?

What can I do ?

Thanks.

Are they single layer Dolby Vision? Dual layer are not supported by Apple.

How can I know if the file is single or dual layer with Mediainfo ?

Thanks.

A dual layer Dolby Vision video (as one from a UHD Blu-Ray with Dolby Vision) has 2 video tracks:

  • a 4K (3840x2160) video track in HDR10 (for players not supporting Dolby Vision),
  • a Full HD (1920x1080 - I have no idea why it is not 4K) Dolby vision layer, marked with a * in MediaInfo?

A single layer Dolby Vision video has only one video track.
