If you’re talking about Profile 8 playback, the Apple TV with Infuse is the most accurate player. I get that many details can seem confusing, but it doesn’t need to be complicated.
Always:
- Use an LG OLED (preferably 2019 or newer; or Panasonic outside the US, or Sony A95K if you have one).
For Profile 5 and 8 files (this will cover 95% of movies):
- Use an Apple TV with Infuse for Profile 5 and 8 Dolby Vision files.
- If a Profile 8 file has CMv4, process it with my script to convert tot CMv2.9 (until Infuse supports CMv4).
Profile 7 file handling:
- Convert all your Profile 7 files to Profile 8 using my script if they don’t have expanded brightness (easy to check with Mediainfo and/or DoVi_Scripts).
- If a Profile 7 FEL file has expanded brightness (rare these days), generate your own DoVi metadata using 3-1 in DoVi_Scripts or DoViBaker via DoVi_Scripts with 8-1.
For HDR10/HDR10+ only files:
- Generate DoVi metadata using 3-1 in DoVi_Scripts or DoViBaker via DoVi_Scripts with 8-1.
- Avoid watching HDR10-only files on Apple TV due to a tvOS bug of not passing HDR metadata.
If you want to enjoy lossless Spatial Audio:
- if you have the actual Profile 7 disc/ISO/BDMV, play it back with a capable UHD Blu-ray player (this can also be used to avoid Profile 7 FEL Expanded Brightness handling for movies that are a one-time watch if you don’t want to add them to your library).
- Get a 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K Max, load Kodi 21 or newer onto it, load PKC (PlexKodiConnect, if you use Plex for your library), disable HDR10+ handling in Kodi, enable audio passthrough, and enjoy luminance-accurate Fake TV-led Dolby Vision along with Lossless Spatial audio.
- The major downside with this solution is that it’s not True TV-led Dolby Vision, and everything appears to be converted to CMv4 and processed at least partially with the Dolby Vision IQ engine. Still, it is currently the most accurate Dolby Vision streaming device that also supports Lossless Spatial Audio.
Note on Spatial Audio:
- If you can access the Lossy Spatial Audio tracks, you can typically mux them into a UHD Blu-ray Remux that previously only had Lossless Spatial Audio. You always need to check sync and set delays properly when doing this. This will give you full Apple TV Infuse compatibility.
Note on Profile 5 files:
- If you can access a Profile 5 file, you can strip its metadata, time align it with an HDR10-only UHD Blu-ray Remux, and convert+inject it for a “Hybrid” Profile 8 UHD Blu-ray Remux.
