Disable Upsсaling

@james hello.
Is it possible to disable video upscaling in infuse?

Some use an additional external video processor in their home theater systems, which does this much better than Apple TV. It would be great if infuse didn’t do its own upscaling in such scenarios.

It’s not quite as simple as that as the the resolution is going to be fixed by the Apple TV - IE if you have the Apple TV set to 4K then it’s always going to send 4K video - regardless of how the video is scaled in Infuse. In theory, we could disabling upscaling so a 1080p video would be presented in its native resolution, but if the Apple TV is set to output 4K then you would see a small image in the center of the screen.

One option you could try would be to set the Apple TV video output to 1080p. This would then allow you to use the video device to scale up 1080p videos to 4K (or whatever resolution you are using) instead of using the Apple TV’s upscaling.

Upscaling in infuse ??? What am I missing here. I thought infuse plays the files as they are… no converting at all. (that is what I hate about Plex and thats why I use infuse).

Scaling (up or down) in this sense refers to adjusting the video output to match the screen size you are using. This is different than transcoding which is the process of converting a video to a different format.

Scaling is necessary for any player as without this playing things like 480p videos on a 4K TV would appear as a tiny thumbnail with huge black borders. Or conversely, playing a 4K video on a 1080p TV would show you the center of the video with the sides and top cut off.

How well an app does this scaling can vary, and Infuse has had advanced upscaling features in place for a number of years to provide best-in-class scaling. This is getting expanded further with new AI Upscaling features which are coming soon in the 8.1.2 update.

Ah Right… So @AXL2020 should have mentioned SCALING instead of Upscaling. I get it now.

Thanks.
