Custom variable aspect ratio

Apologies if this is the wrong forum for this, I wasn’t sure. Just wished to see if custom aspect ratio would ever be a possibility? Many straight rips of old TV shows are slightly off in aspect ratio, this would make it so much easier than having to correct the file aspect ratio. Appreciate any help!

I have a video that has the wrong aspect ratio encoded (something that happens often enough), and I went to play it today, and selected the correct “2.35:1” in the aspect ratio options and it didn’t change how it’s displayed. None of the aspect ratios change how it’s displayed, and I verified this across Apple TV, iPad, and Mac.

I found this thread which suggests this behavior is working as intended, i.e. that the aspect ratio option isn’t supposed to do anything if “Zoom Mode” is set to “Normal”, i.e. not “Crop” or “Stretch”:

However, every other video player I’ve used has an aspect ratio setting that can be used on its own to override the aspect ratio embedded in a video file’s metadata.

In the end, I had to edit the file’s metadata using a command-line tool:

But this seems like a bug in Infuse to me. First of all, the interface allows you to select different aspect ratios without touching “Zoom Mode” at all. And second, other video players like VLC and IINA allow you to change the aspect ratio this way, which leads you to expect this behavior.

So I’m filing this bug report or feature request to implement aspect ratios when “Zoom Mode” is set to “Normal”. Conveniently, there is no change needed at all in the interface itself – just the video rendering to obey the option already selected in the interface.

Really hope this can be implemented – it’s a really essential part of a video player, and most people aren’t comfortable with the command line to implement a workaround the way I was able to.

Thank you!

Dear Infuse team,

I have an apple TV which doesn’t have the feature to change aspect ratio like Android TV.
Apple seems to let customers to change it by TV.
However, many TVs don’t have the feature neither.
Could infuse pro provide a feature like Kodi and keep the setting

Kodi’s feature:

I’m really missing the Aspect Ratio range between 2.00 and 2.35. There are so many options after that, but none in between. Im watching most of the time widescreen movies or series on a projector and I want a bit bigger picture but without cutting the black bars completely. Whilst 2.00:1 is very good (12.5% increase) sometimes I wish I’d go for say 15-16% increase. Currently no way, only 2.35 next which is already too much at 32%…
Ideally of course there should be a “custom ratio” option where you can play according to your taste with particular file. I’ve been using for ages Popcorn Hour devices and there it was magnificently straightforward - just set the % rate of increase or decrease (in ±1% steps) and voila. (Mentioning this because already saw people requesting a decrease for particular situations). I’m not suggesting necessarily to apply similar solution, I would be very happy with the possibility to set it myself as “custom” Aspect Ratio. Or at the very least to have one more option between 2.00 and 2.35.

Apologies if that’s been already discussed, tried searching carefully in the forum before posting.
