Conventions for TV Show names

Hi,

I am having trouble naming Series in order to make the metadata for the series appear. My two examples are Silo and Foundation. If I go inside each folder I have subfolders named “Season 1” and “Season 2”. For those I see the correct covers. For the TV Show I don’t see a cover (i am not using local jpg files and I would like the metadata to load). I tried the following names:

“Silo”

“Silo (2023)”

“Silo {tmdb-125988}”

“Foundation”

“Foundation (2021)”

“Foundation {tmdb-93740}”

I know the official documentation does not state that the format {tmdb-123} is available for series - but I tried anyway and I believe, it would be a great improvement, if this was possible - because we could easily and uniquely identify the show.

Also for shows it is not possible to do a search and select metadata like it is possible for movies. That would also be a great improvement. I do favourite the filename solution because any kind of reset/reinstall or having Infuse installed on another machine (e.g. wife’s laptop, which has its own iCloud account and its own storage for metadata) would pickup the correct shows right away.

What do you think?

One side note: when I see the show in e.g. recommended, it shows the correct cover. If I navigate through the Files → TV Shows, then I don’t see some covers. I am using the app on Mac, but I think the tvOS version behaves similar.

Can you provide a screen cap showing how you have the directory structured and the file names for each series?

Often it’s a mismatch between how the directories are named and how the individual episode files are named.

Hello NC_Bullseye. Thank you for your fast reply.

The episodes had file names like I downloaded them. E.g. Silo.S01E01.some.more.stuff.mkv

I have renamed the episodes now but this did not have an effect on the cover image of the series. As said, the cover images of the seasons are correct.

The missing cover image happens on Mac Infuse → Files → TV Shows [a bookmarked folder] → Silo. It also happens on Apple TV if I go to the bookmarked folder. However (!) if I go on Apple TV to TV Shows in Favorites (the “smart” folder, not the bookmarked real folder), then I see a (correct) cover image for the tv series.

Here is the file structure:

You’re going to want to follow this directory and naming structure.

Your file names should be
Series Name year then S0xE0x then any additional info you want then extension

Don’t put the series name before the “Season 01” in the folder name, just Season 01

Thank you for your help. I tried to rename the files in the way you suggested. I still don’t see the cover for the folder in the files section. I attached some screenshots. Maybe I did something wrong. Would you mind to check?

If I may make a suggestion to the developer:

if 100% of the contained files and folders can be matched to a tv series or > 50% can be matched with at least three folders containing, then it is that series for this folder.

This would cope with all cases of number of folders. Probably it is more complex as files are identified to match to seasons etc. But then similar logic could be applied for the matched seasons instead of the folders. and then of course my favorite solution to identify folders using {tmdb-} (or imdb) ids - which in my opinion should always override, what was found out by smart searching.

If parts are open source I could create a Pull Request and suggest some changes.

You need to remove the extra info on the seasons folders.
