I’m having issues with a TV Show that I ripped. When I connect to the SMB share with finder on my Mac then play through VLC the MKV files play fine. When I try to play from the exact same SMB share and Wi-Fi network on Infuse 5 on my Apple TV, I get constant stuttering. Every 30 seconds it needs to load. It’s unwatchable.
Why is this happening?
I’m able to play HEVC encodes of 4K movies with similar or higher bitrates to this rip so the only thing I can think of is that the Apple TV is struggling to decode the H.264.
Have you tried the different options for SMB? Usually the setting of “Auto” works but many have found that either setting it to “SMB 2” or “Legacy” has been a popular fix.
There’s a user guide here Streaming From a Mac, PC, or NAS – Firecore that may help clarify this. Look at the bottom of the page where it says “Troubleshooting”

Thank you so much that completely fixed my issue when I set SMB type to Legacy.
Glad to help! Enjoy
