Confused about how Infuse is handling my audio?

Hi all!

I’m hoping someone can help me understand what’s going on with my setup and what I am missing. I have an Apple TV 4K with Infuse Pro. I have a HW-Q990D soundbar connected as well. I understand that the Apple TV cannot passthrough TrueHD or DTS, but that infuse supports E-AC3 7.1, or Dolby Digital Plus. I have multiple files with this audio format and I get mixed results.

  1. If the file contains Atmos metadata, then my soundbar properly shows “Dolby Atmos” regardless of where my my Apple TV is plugged into to. I expected this.
  2. If the file does not contain Atmos metadata, and if my Apple TV is plugged into my TV, then it shows just “Dolby Digital” (NOT Dolby Digital Plus) - am I losing two channels here??
  3. If the file does not contain Atmos metadata and if my Apple TV is plugged into my soundbar, then it reads Multi Channel PCM. I understand that Infuse decodes but I thought that the ATV would support a direct passthrough for DD+. I expect this to be shown for TrueHD and DTS, not DD+.

What am I misunderstanding here? I have read the audio overview page and as far as I can tell, my ATV should be passing through DD+ and Infuse should not be changing it to Multi Channel PCM

Any help or knowledge is appreciated here. Thank you so much!

Mike

The Apple TV puts out all audio as PCM (if not forced to Dolby Digital 5.1 or Stereo in the audio settings). You won’t loose any quality since it’s a lossless process unless in case of TrueHD Atmos or DTSX the hight info will be omitted. Be sure that your TV has the correct audio settings, it should be set to passthrough the audio to the soundbar without interfering (so if the ATV is plugged into the TV it should also ready Multi CH PCM on the Soundbar).

I think it sounds like everything is expected.

Best bet is to do an audio test file to see.
