Color issues with Dolby Vision on Mac

still nothing ? i tested on iphone and its the same ,i rly dont know what to think of it.none of the beta build seems to have fixed it,hdr looks infinitely better and brighter than dv

two other examples.irl hdr10 doesnt make any clipping but looks actually perfect, while DV looks exactly like sdr …

I’m annoying but no,it doesn’t rly support it.

Apart from .ISO files, DV files in MP4 or mkv play in SDR fallback, even simple hdr10 looks miles ahead …

Maybe if you’re willing to share the files you used to say “DV is supported” i could try them,as for now no file plays in DV really

Oh and I’m not patronizing or anything, just pointing out that it sounds like fake advertisment and that the support is not yet truly stable imho

Hi. I have already written about this problem in TestFlight. There is a flicker of the screen when watching DV Profile 5 video, I thought to fix it for release, but no. In version infuse 7.3(3923) - this problem was not.

Mac os 12.0.1

Infuse 7.3 public release

below is the problem in the video

319PC

When you play LLDV Profile 5 Dolby Vision and the display doesn’t support or recognize DV and/or that format (Player Led), then it needs HDR metadata added so the display goes into its HDR ST2084 mode and displays correctly.

If it doesn’t kick your display into its DV or HDR mode, then it will appear as SDR to your display, with possible washed out colors. This could be what you’re seeing.

What display are you using?

Built in display of MacBook pro 14 2021 …which to my knowledge, does support DV fully

It seems that there are issues with HDR10 in Infuse on the Mac.
Which might explain the difference you see between HDR10 and DV versions of the same video. See this thread (and my post): MacOS HDR Clipping (Blown Out) - #9 by jrmec.49364

I have read your comment and post but sadly I don’t believe this is true

DV looks incredibly dull .

I’m positive it’s not the normal behavior because

1)i have an iso file in DV (same DV profile btw ) which plays beautifully with nice colors and highlights, just like hdr10 nay better !
.but the same video in mkv or MP4 plays badly

2)i updated to the latest beta which fixe clipping and adapt values to the new mbp 2021 xdr display ,yet the difference between hdr10 and Dolby vision is INCREDIBLY noticeable ,DV just looks like sdr, okayish colors ,bad/terrible brightness

I have seriously no idea what the problem may be at this point and kinda pissed since HDR viewing is the only reason I bought infuse ,and i cannot play any of my DV releases …

Does the Dolby Vision Profile 5 currently implemented use the RPU at all on MacOS/iOS (doing the curve reshaping/brightness mapping adjustment)? Or is it mapping the IPTPQc2 color space without reshaping? (Effectively HDR10).

Hi, i’m running 7.3.1 and still have issues playing DV content on Mac (Macbook Pro 16 - M1 Pro).
For example, here is what i’m supposed to see :

And here is what i get :

Everything is OK on Apple TV and iPhone so i’m wondering what is the problem here…
Note that on Apple TV this is not a fallback to HDR because my LG C8 goes into Dolby Vision mode.
Thanks !

Personally I like what you’re getting over what you’re “supposed” to get. It looks far more detailed.

Believe me the image is “washed out”, here is another example :

From an HDR release :

(the screenshot adds an halo in the sky of the second one but actually it’s not that big and it’s beautiful)

From the Dolby Vision release :

To clarify, all my Dolby Vision movies are dvhe.08.06.
If I understood correctly, the Apple TV cannot read this profile but Infuse does manage it since my TV goes into Dolby Vision mode.
(According to some people it seems that the RPU layer is being ignored, so it’s potentially “fake” Dolby Vision, but it’s watchable).
If there really are profiles that are impossible to read on macOS, maybe you just have to “cheat” like on tvOS, even if it’s not real Dolby Vision, it’s still beautiful .

With the currently implementation, you’re just watching the HDR base layer, there should be no difference between watching it with or without Dolby vision.

There are no profiles that are “impossible” to read on macOS. It’s just a matter of waiting for people to reverse engineer the decoding. Apple has built in support for Profile 5 and Profile 8.6, though I’m not sure if Infuse is using that support/AVPlayer at all since the colors for profile 5 don’t match with QuickTime at the moment. I’m guessing the current infuse implementation for profile 5 is using the correct color space now to display correct colors, but is ignoring the RPU.

hey there @james ,any news on the topic ? while the DV are playable ,they definitely look like sdr and certainely not as bright and colorful(when its needed ) as what you would expect from dolby vision. have you managed to play the files i sent you? i was wondering maybe my movies are faulty ?

my trial for infuse is already expired so the pro version is bought now,but i would rly like to get some support on the topic as watching DOLBY movies is an important part of my mac purchase, and almost the sole reason for buying infuse …

@james sorry to tag again but im thinking maybe its a problem related to level as dolby test files -grabbed from dolby website - which are dvhe05.09 play beautifully ,however all of my dvhe05.06 movies dont look good at all!

any idea on this ?

ok i was getting so mad that i actually rented the movies on apple tv which are in dolby vision just to show you what i mean,as u can see it looks absolutely terrible in infuse compared to apple tv
