Cannot access Mac mini M4 SMB shares

I’ve replaced my Synology NAS by a Mac mini M4. Even though SMB is enabled, I cannot access the SMB share on the Mac mini where the movies reside. When I try to add the share, it reports a user/password error.

I have no such problems accessing this share from macOS or iOS, using the same credentials.

I repeated the operation several times, so I know it’s not a password issue. I also tried to go from Auto to SMB3, 2, 1 and Classic : same issue each time.

Any idea what is going wrong ?

PS. When I tried to access the share from VLC on the Apple TV, after adding the share with a username and password, a dialog popups saying “SMB authentication required”, and asking for a username and password. Pressing “Connect” redisplays the same dialog in a continuous loop.

If you haven’t already done so, you may need to enable the “Windows File Sharing” SMB option on the Mac mini. (I had to for my Mac mini media server. I know that Infuse’s SMB support has improved recently, so perhaps that’s no longer an issue but the docs haven’t changed and I’m going to guess that’s the culprit.)

This is described as step 3 of the Mac section on the Enabling File Sharing page of the documentation:

Indeed that worked, thanks so much!

Now I’m wondering why an App created specifically for Apple platforms and running on Apple TV has to have the “Windows File Sharing” SMB option enabled. I guess it must be related to the SMB library used and that Apple does not make their own library available.

Anyway, thanks again.

Sounds like you’re sorted but I’d consider running Jellyfin on your Mac to manage your library and run the shares. If nothing else, it’s much faster than SMB, which I found would occasionally stutter on larger files.
