I tested both types of local subtitles: embedded subtitle tracks contained within MKV files, and external .srt subtitle files stored alongside MP4 files. When playing at original quality, the local subtitles appeared as selectable options. However, when transcoding was enabled, the local subtitle options disappeared entirely.
This happens on Apple TV’s and Mac’s. I haven’t tested iOS or iPadOS devices.
