I recently switched from using Infuse with Jellyfin (tried both direct and library mode) to simply using a smb share with the built in Infuse library. I remember previously that next episodes of series I’m watching would show up either with in-progress media or in a next up row below.
Since switching to smb I cannot figure out how to make up next episodes show up in the top row or anywhere. I can only see currently watching and recently added if enabled. Is this even a thing with smb shares? I’m pretty sure it worked for me previously when using Infuse in library mode with Jellyfin which should be the same type of library, right?
I tried all I could think off apart from clearing my library cache. I think this would loose track of watched media. I am willing to go for it if it has a chance of helping.
If you go in settings, select “Up Next List” and change it to “Watching Only” that should show TV series with next episode and episodes in progress. It will also show movies that are partially watched.
The thing is that this is exactly how I have it set up and it still doesn’t show next episodes. I have many series that I’m in the middle of so it’s not like there’s nothing to show. Thanks for confirming it should work. I might try to delete the library cache in the end.
So I decided to nuke my library. I deleted files in iCloud and deleted apps on all devices. This did indeed reset my library, however after setting up my share again on a fresh install with all default settings I still don’t see any up-next episodes. To test this I marked a few as watched. Again the only thing that works in the top row is media that is in-progress. Looks like a bug to me. I’m on the latest version.
I mean the top most row of the home screen. It shows media that is in-progress and recently added. You can choose what it displays in settings and it’s called “Up Next List” there.
What I want and what I’m pretty sure worked before is that this row would also show next, unplayed episodes of series I am currently watching.
Mine does exactly that .. however it does have a limitation that really bugs me.
If you watch the last episode currently available, then it drops off the list; so when next week’s episode is available the series/season doesn’t appear back on the list until I manually add back to the watching list.
Maybe this is the problem you are seeing, if you are watching the latest available episodes in series/seasons.
Just trying to think this through, were you expecting the tv series that you had previously watched parts of to show up in the new set up with SMB? If so I don’t think they will show up in the watching section since it’s a new base.
Try an experiment, go to one of the series you’re watching that you still have unwatched episodes and go to the last episode you watched. Mark it as Unwatched and then toggle it right back to Watched. Then go back to the home screen and check the Up Next list and see if it show there now.
If you have your Up Next List set to “Watching Only” it should be in the first position I believe.
At the time of switching I already had some data saved to Infuse library since I experimented with library mode before, just not with smb, so after the switch I had some shows partially watched.
Today I tried setting up my library as a fresh one, wiped iCloud and all that. Once set up I marked some episodes as watched and still my up next is not working
From your description it appears that if you have a season of partially watched episodes you are expecting the season to be shown in the watching row. This is not how it works.
For it to appear in the watching row you either have to actually watch an episode, or manually set it to be displayed in the watching row.
Once in the watching row, when you have watched an episode it will keep the season in the watching row until there are no more unwatched episodes available in the season, or you manually remove it from the watching row.
Here’s my home screen. Mandalorian is correctly shown as I am mid episode. This is currently the only partially watched episode in my library. Suits has first 2 seasons marked as watched but the first episode of season 3 is not showing up. It also didn’t work when I had only the first episode of season 1 marked as watched. No matter what I try, no upcoming episodes show up for any shows.
Unless I imagined that this was a thing before I think this is a bug.
You should be able to watch the first episode and have it start showing in the Up Next list and I believe you can also add it to the up next list by going to the first episode and clicking on the three dots in the upper right and adding to the watching list there.
Note that the watching row currently works on seasons, not series.
So in your case Suits season 3 will not appear in the watching row until you start watching the season 3, or you manually set the 1st episode of season 3 to be in the watching list.
When you get to the end of the season, it does not automatically add season 4 episode 1, because as I said it only works on a season. You will then need to manually select/watch season 4 episode 1 to make it appear in the watching list.
Ok, I tried 3 scenarios based on your suggestions.
I marked Suits S03E01 as watched. S03E02 didn’t show up.
I manually added season 3 to watching. S03E01 did show up and when marked as watched it changed to the next episode.
I played the first episode of another series. Skipped most of it but let it run to the end of the file. The next episode correctly showed up in the watching list.
So by the looks of it, it works with some caveats. It’s not as seamless as I had it with Jellyfin but I want to use smb for other reasons. I think my confusion was mostly because after switching to smb/infuse library I only marked episodes as watched and didn’t actually play any files. I was expecting Infuse to show up next episodes automatically.
Another suggestion thread you may want to add your support to is Smart TV Show Playlist that requests the ability to create a list of TV shows and as long as there are unwatched episodes that show stays visible in the list. If you watch all available episodes it hides that series until new unwatched episodes are added.
