Buffering when playing larger files (30+ GB files)

Hello there

When watching larger files, Infuse Pro is buffering every 5 minutes, rending the experience very bad.

I tried with 2 files:

  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2023 2160p REMUX HEVC HDR10 TrueHD 7.1-samhyde@torrentgalaxy (56 GB)
  • Game.of.Thrones.S01E09.2160p.DoVi.HDR.BluRay.REMUX.HEVC.DTS-HD.MA.TrueHD.7.1.Atmos-PB69 (32 GB)

My internet speed is 300 Mbps which I reach on the many devices I have.

However, when I do a speedtest from a file via Infuse Pro, I get always 71 Mbps and the graph is more or less a straight line.

I understand ethernet is better but in my apartment I would not be able to change the position of the router.

Is there anything I could do to manage to play these big files?

I had a similar problem with 80 GB files but it after a while it started working again.

Is file size to blame or something else?

How are you connected to your server? SMB, FTP, etc

If you’re using SMB you may want to try switching to SMB2 or Legacy.

I was on SMB auto. I tried SMB2, same issue. I also tried Legacy, same issue.

Anything else I should check, you think?

And thanks for taking the time to reply.

Would it be possible to try just a temporary Ethernet cable to see it that may work? I know you said you couldn’t move the router but maybe a long cable to test with?

Did you run a full speed test in Infuse with each change from Auto to 2 to Legacy?

Another possibility would be to try using FTP. Some users seem to have better luck with FTP over SMB.

Yes, I will try with Ethernet cable.

Based on your experience, what would be the max GB of file to stream on WiFi? Do we know the limitations?

There are so many variables with WiFi that it’s impossible to say what “normal” is. Many users have no issues what so ever with WiFi and others have constant problems.

The router, the distance, the brand of wireless, walls, what the dog ate for dinner, etc. all can change WiFi results. Even moving furniture in adjacent rooms can vary results.

You may be able to move the router up or down a foot or two and make a world of difference or check which band 2.4 GHz or 5GHz you’re using and maybe try the other.

Types of files also may be problematic, such as x265 for older ATVs and what codecs they use.

What model of ATV (I assume that’s what you’re using) or iOS device are you using?

Yes, I use an Apple TV 4K, bought in July 2022.

I tried Ethernet and I get 400 Mbps, no buffering. Quality seems a bit better, also.

I tried connect the Apple TV to my mini (used to download the files) via Ethernet and it worked, too. However, I lose all internet functionalities on the Apple TV (Photos, Netflix etc)

It seems the Apple TV can’t manage both Ethernet and wifi at the same time.

I have confirmation from Apple that we can’t use both. I rearranged my setup and will unplug the Ethernet cable manually when needed. Problem solved.

Actually, I used the Mac mini by enabling Sharing internet. All is good, now.
