Black screen when playing local DV P8 video on iPad

Great find! I bet this is my issue as well.

iPad Pro 11 M4 - Having this exact same issue. Disabling the Dolby Vision setting allows the video to play, although I can’t really tell if HDR working correctly or not.

I get this exact same behavior on my iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Is this something that will be fixed?

Enabling Dolby Vision gives me nice brightness boost and movies with higher numbers of MaxCLL really pops out. Disabling DV enables fall back to base layer of HDR10 that never goes beyond 1000 nits. I think it is normal because HDR10 does not contain dynamic metadata that uses tone mapping to match your display brightness. Anyway if movie has peak brightness above 1000 nits the difference is staggering and the experience of watching a movie can’t match any TV on the market if comes to HDR on the newest iPad with OLED display.

Same problem for me. I’m on iPhone 14 pro, DV file and got black screen downloaded files. It works only if I disable DV in the settings.

So HDR, but not full DV. That makes sense as to why it still looks okay when turned off. Would love to see this fixed though, because you’re absolutely right. I bought this iPad specifically to watch movies on that screen and it does not disappoint.

just purchase infuse today for watching Dolby vision video and happened this

all the Dolby files on my device or in iCloud are Black screen. need to disable Dolby vision on Advanced Options for watch
it even not show up HDR when disable it. please fix it

this problem happen on my iPad Pro M2 2022.

My situation is with an iPhone 15 Pro, running iOS 8.3, and using Infuse 8.0.9. I’m unable to correctly play DV P8 videos—some parts of the screen are black, even though the DV option in the advanced settings of the playback interface is turned on. For other videos that do play, there is no DV option in the advanced settings, and I suspect it has reverted to HDR10 playback.

Note: These DV P8 videos play correctly on Apple TV using Infuse.

Same here, screen is always black when playback local MKV video with DoVi P8 on my MacBook Pro 16 2023 (latest Mac OS 15.3.1)from both local drive and cloud storage remotely. But there’s no issue when I used Movist Pro (seems to have HDR effect) and VidHub (seems to be in SDR) to playback.

Todays 8.1 update includes expanded support for Profile 8 Dolby Vision which should resolve the issues here.

Same issue when play back some DV Video (P8 probably) on both my iPad Pro 12.9 M1 and MacBook Pro 16 M2 Max. There’s no issue for Vidhub and Movist Pro.

Are you sure that VidHub officially supports Dolby Vision? The program description page only shows the HDR. There is a possibility that VidHub is taking metadata from the HDR layer rather than Dolby Vision. That’s why there is no black screen. This is how Plex works, for example.

Depends on which DV profile, some will be converted to SDR and some will be played back in HDR. But you will never get back screen in any case.

infuse can also be configured to show either in SDR or in HDR and there will be no black screen.
But at the same time, infuse can play almost all types of files with Dolby Vision 5/8 without problems. But VidHub can’t. Therefore, your comparisons are not entirely honest

You may check to ensure you are in fact using the latest Infuse 8.1 version as this has improvements for handling of Dolby Vision videos. You can check the version of Infuse which is currently installed by scrolling to the bottom of the Infuse > Settings menu.

If you are seeing playback issues with Dolby Vision videos when using Infuse 8.1 we’d love to get a sample of the file you are seeing issues with.

Files of any size can be uploaded here.

Note: As already mentioned, most other apps will not support Dolby Vision and will end up playing these files in SDR or HDR, with varying levels of accuracy.

Hi James,

Thanks for the prompt reply, I have uploaded video file with the name “GoT DoVi Sample” on your DropBox, please hep to check it out. This Dolby Vision Video still plays back with black screen after I upgrade my infuse to the latest version 8.1 on my Macbook Pro 16 2023 with Mac OS version 15.3.1. BTW, same issue after I toggled off the dolby vision in settings.

Appreciate your help in advance.
