Best Way to Update ATV 2 to current OS

I want to upgrade my ATV 2 to the most current Apple OS - but I’m running the most current version of ATV Flash black - and it won’t let me do a software update - my current version is 4.4.4 - which is not where I want to be.

Even tried the last resiort - doing a complete restore back to factory and it won’t let me even do that.

What is the best way for me to update the ATV so that I have the new UI?

I subscribe directly to HuluPlus and a couple of other items that I want to be able to use. Thanks in advance.

You cannot update to the latest firmware directly on the ATV2 - the existing jailbreak will have disabled this capability. You should, however, be able to do a restore to factory settings from iTunes - what goes wrong when you try? You may need to get the ATV2 into DFU mode before doing the restore - I am not sure.

Note that if the jailbreak for the latest firmware (2.5.1) is a tethered one. You should be aware of this if you decide to upgrade to 2.5.1 and then want to jailbreak.

James - can you help???

itimpi is right about the tethered portion for 5.2.1, and unfortunatley there’s no way around this at the moment.

If you choose to update the Apple TV software you will want to re-jailbreak with the latest version of Seas0nPass and re-run the aTV Flash (black) installer from a Mac or PC. Doing this will update and jailbreak your Apple TV at the same time.

Prior to updating you may want to backup your settings to streamline the setup process after the update is complete. This can be done on the Apple TV through the Maintenance --> Settings --> Manage Backups menu.

Hope this helps.

@easelpad,

Until recently, I was in the same boat: an ATV2 with 4.4.4, and aTV Flash 2.2.

Over the last few days, I’ve been able to upgrade the ATV to 5.2.  (I didn’t want 5.2.1 since it requires a tethered jailbreak).

First I downloaded Seas0nPass 0.9.0 and ran it (after connecting a microUSB cable).  I control-clicked on Create IPSW, and selected 5.2 from the drop-down menu. Seas0nPass then proceeded to upgrade the ATV2 from 4.4.4 to 5.2 (with the help of iTunes which launched auto-magically).

-> note:  I had to unplug the power cord from the back of the ATV2. Took me a while to discover that trick.

After the upgrade was complete, my ATV2 was happliy loaded with 5.2, and I have the new iOS-stye UI.  In addition, it’s jailbroken, as indicated by a Firecore logo on the Settings icon.

Uofortunately, the aTV Flash installer refused to run. I have version 1.1.1 that I received when I first bought aTV Flash.  It throws an error, reporting thst the installer has expired. There seems to be no way to download the current version without paying Firecore again. If you already have the 2.2 installer, you may be OK. If you don’t, be aware that you might end up with an updated ATV, but no aTV Flash. I’ve contacted Firecore Support to see if I’ve missed something.

I’m bummed that I’ve lost aTV Flash, but I have the new iOS apps, and version 5.2 fixes a nasty Netflix bug that plagued lots of Netflix titles.

Good luck with your upgrade!

You didn’t miss anything, your licence expired. For compatability reasons, firecore won’t let older versions install, if they did let it install and something messed up, there would be a lot more customer crying going on. Get a lifetime licence to avoid this.

Hi James or itimpi,

Im in the same boat as Kyphos 4.4.4, and aTV Flash 2.2. Except that i have the lifetime account. will i be able to upgrade and keep my jailbreak untethered? Also i use PLEX app on my apple TV2 as well as overflow and XBMC. Will everthing still worK/ What about my setting for XBMC, like the sources, will those restore via the back up feature? B iggest reason i want to load 5.2 is i want access to the HULUPlus app. Please reply

As you say you have a lifetime account then the latest version of the aTV Black Media Player installer should be available for download from your account.

If it isn’t available for download from your account then there has been a glitch in your FireCore Account and hopefully as you have contacted FireCore support they will be able to sort out the problem and make it available for download from your account.

yes they are. but my problem is im stuck on 4.4.4. i have the shsh blobs saved but cant seem to upgrade to 5.2 which is the last untehered version. i have tried to do so byusing seas0n pas to make the 5.2 retore but then itunes woont load it no matter what. im on a MAC using newest osx

Was finally able to upgrade to 5.1. No idea why 5.2 did not work, but from 5.1.1 onwards, I get a “unit not eligable” response.

Good enough for now, a little disapointed as having BT access (from 5.2) would have been nice.

I hope the community figures out how to jail-break (un-thethered!) the current generation.

Same problem here. Stuck with 4.4.4. Actually bought the firecore upgrade as my account had expired. Installed the firecore update which worked fine. Now stuck tring to get Seas0nPass transferred via DFU to iTv2. Pushing <menu><play> on the remote does not do anything.

Ideas / Suggestions welcome. Looks like Apple currently has the lead in the neverending jailbreak battle … :frowning:

Rgds.
