with the balck ATV whats the best way to play avi and mkv’s on it?

You can use either XBMC or the Firecore Media Player.

I prefer Media Playe as it has a much simpler UI.

UI =User Interface.

Basically I find I need to use less ‘clicks’ on the remote to get to achieve what I want using Media Player.    XBMC is functionally richer, but pays for that in having amore complex menu structure.   Of course there is nothing to stop you having both of them on the ATV2 (as I do) and using whichever one seems appropriate at the time.
