Automatically set aspect ratio to crop black bars

Hi @james ,

I like to set the aspect ratio of my content in Infuse and then cut it to get rid of the black bars.
I always have to manually set this. Maybe Infuse can get the information from a database in the internet (I don’t know if this information is available on themovieDB) so I don’t have to play around until I find the correct aspect ratio.

The correct aspect ratio is with the black bars…

I prefer without black bars, even when the picture gets cropped.

You said that maybe Infuse could get the information from a database so you don’t have to play around until you find the correct aspect ratio. I’m just saying that there is no such database because the correct aspect ratio is with the black bars.

@james @strwht I second that request.
I just made my father install and subscribe to infuse on AppleTV.
But he loves to have his TV screen full, no black bars, especially when it’s a 2.35:1 movies.

You can modify that in the navbar in “setting>advanced options>ratio” and set it to “16:9”, as an example to fill the screen of a standard 16/9 LED TV, but it’s always manually, and per content.

Could it be a persistent option in “settings>playback”, under “speed playback” for example, and be labelled something like “Preferred ratio”, so you could have “auto” (by default), but also 4/3, 16/9, etc…

It would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Hi Infuse Team,

First, thank you for the incredible work you’ve done with Infuse Pro, it’s hands-down one of the most polished and user-friendly media players available.

I wanted to suggest a feature that could further enhance the playback experience: an intelligent auto-zoom function that detects and removes black bars from videos (letterboxing or pillarboxing).

While manual zooming is available, it can be inconvenient to adjust this on a per-movie basis, especially for users with ultra-wide screens or varied media sources. A solution that automatically analyzes the video to determine the actual image area and adjusts the zoom accordingly would be a great quality-of-life improvement.

Ideally, this feature could:

Detect black bars dynamically using AI or lightweight computer vision techniques.

Respect content boundaries to avoid over-cropping (e.g., with a sensitivity threshold).

Be toggleable globally or per video, so users retain full control.

Optionally “learn” from user preferences over time, when a specific ratio is manually selected for each movie.

This would ensure that screen space is used optimally without requiring manual intervention, and would provide a more immersive experience across diverse content.

Thanks again for continuing to improve Infuse — I look forward to what’s next!

Thank you
