Audio out of sync at 24 Hz output – even in 2025?

Hello everyone, after a long time, I switched back to Apple TV 4K (2020 version) and found that the audio synchronization issue still exists, and I am quite surprised that it has not been resolved yet. (connected to Sony STR-DH590 and then to LED TV, all via HDMI)

I looked at similar posts and a lot has already been written about this issue. I quickly noticed that 23.976 FPS video has a video delay of about 200 ms (the sound goes first) with 5.1 audio, while 25.000 FPS video has 5.1 audio that is fine and synchronized.

I don’t want to turn off Match Frame Rate because in Europe we often have different movies in different FPS. I tried resetting and redoing the wireless sound calibration, but it had no effect. Turning on the Dolby Digital 5.1 output solves the problem, but there is still the issue that when I subsequently play stereo content, it plays in 5.1 (another known problem).

So: can this problem be solved in this case other than by setting the audio delay directly in the MKV files? I’m not blaming Infuse; the MrMC and Plex applications have the same issue.

What happens if you bypass your receiver and plugged the Apple TV directly into the TV?

Then that’s fine, but the TV doesn’t have eARC, so the only way I could send 5.1 audio to the AV receiver would be to enable Dolby 5.1 output in the ATV settings, but then there’s the problem with stereo audio again.

However, I read somewhere that this issue only affects Apple TV 4K 1gen – if upgrading to version 2022 would help, I would do it (or wait for this year’s model).
