ATV3 and ATV2 Flash Black

I’ve got a ATV2 and will be getting a ATV3 as well soon.  My question - If I purchase Flash Black today, can I use it on both my ATV2 and my ATV3?  This assumes that they will both be at the same level of IOS soon.

Cheers,

I want to know as well, as i just sold my Apple tv 2 for this one, forum should start a ATV3 area already

Yes indeed. Full details can be found here.

Sorry but the link does not state if it works or doesnt work on ATV3, Speaking on behalf of others if there was a simple link stating any of the following it would be appreciative. As for the some of us that have sold our ATV2 already we are without your superb product and want it back to they way we had it ASAP.

Thanks,

1- ATV3 buyers take note JB and Firecore update will not work on ATV3 yet, we are working on it. a ETA will be ie next week 20th march 2012

2- We have tried it out on a ATV3 and unfortunately … issues remain, we will keep you updated on its progress

3- Warning to ATV3 that are impatient, do not try and JB/update it, it could brick your ATV3. Wait for us to make sure its good to go

why 20th March, do you guys not have it yet??? I used it as a example date. A simple progress report would be good because as stated for those of us that jumped on the bandwagon we are without a JB ATV, if i was to hear it would be another month or 2 for firecore to have something available i would simply buy another ATV2 for the meantime and reinstall my JB/Firecore and have plex ready to go.

Some info / progress report page would be great for us all asking the same question in another thread, and save James for more important stuff.

cheers

Lates news here.

would be nice if they tweeted more news. its 2 days old

I would say you will be waiting a very long time foran ATV3 jailbreak. ATV2 will always be possible because of the boot rom A4 chip exploit.

ATV3 has an A5 chip so no boot rom exploit. The only other A5 devices are iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. Both took months to be jail broken and the latest jailbreak released for those used a mobile backup exploit that doesn’t exist for ATV because it doesn’t do backups in iTunes.

I suspect that ATV3 will be jail broken at same time as iPad 3 which will probably also take months for public release and then because exploit will not be at chip level upgrades will not be possible without losing jailbreak and new exploits will be needed to re-jailbreak, which again is likely to take months.

ATV2 is by far the best best for now because of the limera1n exploit that makes it permanently vulnerable to at least a tethered jailbreak.

Guess we shall see…

On the blog entry it did state that the aTV Flash Black is only compatible with AppleTVs wih iOS 4.2 - 4.4.4 (assuming only with the ATV2).  Not too sure what the ATV3 has installed when you received it, but it cannot be downgraded unless the saved firmwares have been previously backup, which I am sure it cannot do without it being previously flashed.  I know the hype for iOS 5 that have been released, but I am not risking to update my ATV2 yet until a proper release for aTV Flash Black for iOS 5  from Firecore.  Also, I am very pleased of what the current release of aTV Flash Black can do especially with the Media Player (streaming video files from a computer or network drives).  Therefore, just stick with the ATV2 models with iOS 4.4.4 installed.

iPad3 has been jailbroken about a week ago already.

Where did you heart that? I have seen that the iPad2 running iOS5.1 was been jailbroken within a few days of iOS5.1 release (I assume because a previous exploit still worked), but no suggestion of a jailbreak for the iPad 3.

3 Methods to be exact  iphone-dev.org

That link does not say anything about a successful iPad3 jailbreak. It just says that they hope the methods used on the iPad2 iOS 5.1 jailbreak may help with getting one for the iPad3 and that progress is looking promising. There is a specific statement about no ETA for the jailbrea being public ally available

Having said that things definitely look promising and it may come sooner than expected.

Will I might be missing something but gaining root access is not a jailbreak?

Not as I understand it.   It is the first stage towards getting a jailbreak.   The key thing it gives you is the ability to go poking around the installed software to see what you can find in the way of weaknesses that can be exploited.  However there can still be considerable delay between getting root access and having a working jailbreak as was illustrated by the delay on the iPhone 4S where the delay was measured in months.

I know this but I still think you will be waiting a long time. The jailbreak by i0n1c will not be released (that’s what he has said repeatedly) and the other methods rely on developer account. You may recall Musclenerd made same early jailbreak progress for iPhone 4S back in October and public release was not until months afterwards.

I think you can pretty much count on it taking months for Jailbroken ATV3. But if I’m wrong then this will be good for everyone. I just don’t think it will be straight forward.

Ok thanks guys for clearing it up.
