ATV2 untethered JB question

What is actually meant by rebooting the device? If i put it into standby is it considered reboot?

to explain a bit more: my ATV2 is running software version 4.3 (2557) and when running atv flash and choosing 6.1 (IPSW 5.2) it says it can’t do it. I saved my blobs beforehand but seems only version i can actually fresh install is either the current one untethered or the latest one (6.1.3 / 5.2.1) tethered

so if i install the latest one, when would i need to tether it to the PC? everytime it comes out of sleep/standby or after a hard reset/reboot?

also kind of offtopic but where can i see the user/pass of a FTP source for movies in the file structure ?
it’s on the ATV now but if i fresh install i’d need to re-enter it and forgot the credentials…been a long while.

thx

You should be able to restore any version for which you have saved blobs. It sounds as though you do not have blobs for the intermediate release?

It is only required after a power loss or a hard reboot. Coming out of sleep/standbye does not require the tethered boot. That means the tethered boot is inconvenient, but for those who never disconnect the power it can be an acceptable method of working and better than no jailbreak.

right, no blobs saved for anything inbetween…i got my ATV2 on the free market about a year ago, it came with 4.3 and just now i tried to upgrade to 6.x

so it’s safe to JB latest 6.1.3 even tethered if i don’t remove power? i only put it in sleep mode and wake up from remote (middle button), never remove the power cable.

one more thing: what’s worthed to go 6.1.3 tethered vs staying on 4.3 untethered now? is it that much of an improvement?
i only use it for XBMC, there’s no itunes movies & series in my area.

If that is your mode of working then yes. However if you use the facility n the latest SeasonPass to save the blobs for your existing 4.3 release (assuming they are not already saved) then you retain the ability to go back to 4.3.

If you never use anything other than XBMC then whether it is worth upgrading is highly debatable. I would only consider updating if there is a feature in later firmware that you want to use.

so is there some major feature in 6.1.3 vs 4.3 other than bluetooth keyboard support?
are native VPN connections (like in iphone/ipad iOS) supported?

one more thing: is the restart method of holding menu & play/pause and releasing when the led flickers after some seconds considered a reboot?

i used it couple of times already when XBMC or some plugin was unresponsive and everything was stuck. Would the tethered JB force me to hook it up to the PC when restarting using above method?

Yes - that forces a reboot after which a tethered boot is needed again.

thx

ok so the only time i need to use the PC to tether boot is when some stupid x-navi stream gets stuck and remote/device is like hanging…i’m trying to get back to 4.3 but snowbreeze says device not eligible, even though i saved blobs before upgrading to 5.2.1 (couple of weeks ago).

can it be that even if i tried saving blobs, they didn’t get saved?

any way to get 4.3 back on?

interesting, i’m using a beta seasonpass and it downloads 4.3 as we speak…
with the normal seasonpass it gave me the finger.
i’ll post if downgrade went OK

downgrade to 4.3 went OK with the beta version.
happily running untethered now.

strange how blobs saved with the Beta weren’t picked up by the regular version…
