ATV2 5.0.1 Tethered JB - No Maintenance Option or FC Logo

I have an ATV2 and updated to 5.0.1.

Downloaded the latest Seas0npass and I go through the JB process following the Jailbreaking 101 post.

Says “Custom IPSW Created Successfully”

I unplug the USB and then plugin the USB and Power for a tethered boot.

Says “Tethered Boot Complete! It is now safe to disconnect USB and connect HDMI”

Everything appears to be good and the Apple TV gui is on the display but there is no firecore logo and no maintenance option, it seems the JB is not taking.

Tried this several times, no luck. Ideas much appreciated.

You do not mention the stage of doing the restore of the custom ipsw in iTunes before trying to do a tethered boot?

The restore seems to be automatic from the Jailbreaking 101 post.

Step 5: iTunes will open automatically and start the restore process.

Step 6: iTunes will confirm the restore when complete - your Apple TV is now jailbroken!

Those steps both happen and I get the success message and then I move on to the tethered boot. Is there a step that I need to do in iTunes that is not automatically done by Seas0npass?

It does sound as if you are doing all the steps (You had not originally mentioned doing steps 5 and 6).

The only thing that occurs to me is if the restore phase is not actually using the Custom ipsw file. You can make sure by doing a shift-click on the restore button in iTunes to bring up a file selection dialog to select the ipsw to be restored.

Well your first post got me thinking and I was jumping the gun a little on the iTunes restore part of the JB. FWIW, people need to watch the iTunes status bar when it is launched by Seas0npass because the restore part took a good 2-3 minutes even though Seas0npass had a popup that said “Created IPSW Successfully”.

Odd though, I have the FC logo now, but still no maintenance option in Settings.

One part down, on to the next. Perhaps just installing ATV Flash Black will move things along. I do appreciate the help.

One quick way to know if your ATV is JB’ed is ssh into it.

I also do not have a maintenance setting and I know it is jbroken… I can ssh into it and had the logo.

You do not get a Maintenance menu as part of the Jailbreak. The Maintenance menu is part of ATV Flash and only appears when/if you have installed that software. A successful jailbreak gives you the logo and ssh options.

Thank you. Also, I posted this somewhere else, no responses yet. Does atv flash work with atv2 5.0.1? I tried to install xbmc through ssh… the logo is there but wont load and have read on some sites that it is not compatible with 5.0.1.  Thank you, I am very new to this.

Yes - ATV Flash works with iOS 5.01.

Regarding XBMC that should also work, but you may have to to the XBMC forums to find the build that works.

Back to the original post, I too had the same issue that the image of the FireCore logo in step 6 of http://support.firecore.com/entries/387605 did not show up. When it was plugged into the TV after the JB untethered, it simply shown an iTunes and USB plug icon below it.  Tethered did not work either, same logos.

However, today Seas0nPass released a new version and it appears to work. Note however that when it started up after JB, it took several minutes for the apple interface to finally appear. Once it finally did, it had shown that I was not connected to a network (it had been prior to JB). I reconfigured it and jumped back on my network and ran newest version of ATV Flash, also released today. It found and transferred the software again after several minutes, now working perfectly!

It figures that I spent almost all day yesterday jailbreaking my atv2 and they come out with untethered today! grr

Before the new SeasonPass was released today the jailbreak would have been tethered so this was expected behaviour any time power was removed from the ATV2.

However, today Seas0nPass released a new version and it appears to work. Note however that when it started up after JB, it took several minutes for the apple interface to finally appear. Doing the new jailbreak wipe all existing settings so you have to repeat the ATV2 setup procedure and re-install apps. However if you took advantage of the ATV Flash options under maintenance-Manage backups you could bring forward your app settings and metadata.

I meant to post about the maintenance option not showing up until I installed ATV Flash (which was very easy).

I too just jailbroke two ATV2’s in a tethered jailbreak and will now go back and do the untethered jailbreak. It was nice to get everything working though.

Been trying to rebreak untethered. I restored to original apple software and now when jailbreaking get 1601 error. Trying it again (had power cord plugged in). In case thi doesn’t work… is there a faster way then clicking create ipsw again since I already have the file? Thanks

If you are running Windows you can put the device into DFU mode, download a program called iREB (from http://ih8sn0w.com) and put the device into PwnDFU Mode and in iTunes hold Shift and click Restore. It will let you select the IPSW to restore.

To prevent Seas0nPass from redownloading the IPSW you can hold Shift and click Create IPSW and point it to the already downloaded IPSW in Documents\Seas0nPass\Downloads (I think it is).

Yes - you can go into iTunes and shift-click on the Restore button to bring up a file selection dialog.  At that point you can navigate to the ipsw created by SeasonPass (it will have SP as part of the filename) and select thqt one to be restored.

You need to be in PwnDFU Mode for the Seas0nPass IPSW to be accepted.

What's "pwned" DFU mode?

"Pwned" DFU mode is a special form of DFU mode where the device's bootrom (a low-level part of the device) has been exploited to allow custom firmware to be restored to the device.

True - I forgot to mention that!

thanks… running a mac. not sure what the pwndfu mode is, but it worked nonetheless. Now onto atv flash…
