ATV2 4.2.1 to 5.2?

I have a jailbroken 4.2.1 device using GreenPoison.  Am I able to update to 5.2 (tethered)?  If so, how?  I’ve been trying SeasonPass, Snowbreeze, etc with no luck.

Thanks!!!

Sorry, I mean UNtethered.

You can only do that if you already have saved shsh blobs for that release on your device. It sounds like this is not the case?

Correct.  It has never been updated beyond 4.2.1.  No way to update to 5.2 then?

well if you had the atv flash installed it’s likely your blobs were saved automatically or if you have nito tv install and ever clicked on it to install anything it saved it.

to check download ifaith and check for your blobs

I have my 4.2.1 blobs.  I want to update to 5.2, which I’ve never updated to on this device, thus no blobs.  Not possible?

look I just told you that you have blobs saved if you have the atv flash or nito installed on the unit. If you don’t want to listen simply stop posting or asking the same questions over and over

No need to be rude.  You did not answer my question.  I asked something very direct and gave a very direct response: I do not have any blobs higher than 4.2.1, nothing higher was ever installed, therefore no program could have saved higher blobs.  End of story.

again, if you choose not to listen simply stay on the firmware you have, I told you about 3 times already it doesn’t matter if you install it, it saves it by it self

stop makiing it complicated you asked a question. I gave you the exact info you need if you don’t know what to do with the info give it to someone on ebay that offer the service they will put the unit on 5.2 for you if you have the atv flash installed or if you used nito tv

Attitude much?  This is a NEWLY jailbroken device - therefore NO option of having the blobs previously saved when other versions were still signed.

So according to what I’m gathering, the answer is NO.  You don’t have to be a prick about it.

Robby - just to make sure I understand you, are you saying that aTV flash will save the blobs for firmware updates as they come, even if you don’t install the updates?

He was, yes.

OMG! Really? Robby, please don’t slap the s%*t out of me, but wow! I’m gonna try this right now. I have a brand new ATV2 with 4.2.1 that I would like to update to 5.2. I already got my blobs saved using iFaith 1.4.2 so now I’m gonna use Sn0wbreeze to jailbreak, then install ATV Flash, and see how it goes. I’ll report back. But WOW! If this works, that’d be great! If all else fails, I’ll try the method in this thread on post #2: http://forum.firecore.com/topic/10299.

I’m thinking since I can always go back, I have nothing to lose. (fingers crossed…)

But if it is a newly jailbroken device (since 23rd March this year) there will not be any blobs for any newer versions as Apple (bless) stopped signing old firmwares on that date.

Also, it’s a mistake with versions prior to 5 to imagine that downgrading is a simple matter.  The many doorstops in my house attest to this not being so.

So now I’m totally. confused. I thought Robby’s response, made this month, was a definitive “Yes.” It was horrible, painful and time-consuming but I was only able to jailbreak using this method: http://forum.firecore.com/topic/7279?page=60#comment-63822. After which, I tried to upgrade to 5.3 but so far have not been able to. I tried in iTunes several times on several computers. When that didn’t work, I re-jailbroke using the aforementioned process and installed atv flash and nitoTV. I was able to do updates in nitoTV, but whenever I tried to access either atv flash or nitoTV settings, the system would reboot. My next step was to attempt an upgrade to 5.3 via the device itself and I fell asleep letting it cook. When I woke up, I see that I’m stuck on the iTunes-USB-arrow screen.

So, the adventure continues. Any help would be seriously welcomed.

Well, ian82.  You were right.  I got myself a Bona-Fide shiny new doorstop!  For the number of jailbreaks I’ve done, I should’ve known better.  I’m stuck in a vicious cycle of DFU.  Can’t even get the customized iFaith + Seas0npass + Total Commander .ipsw that was working before, to install.  Ever since I downgraded back down to 4.2.1 from a failed attempt to upgrade to 5.3, I only get either a 1600 or 1618 error.  After re-jailbreaking with 4.2.1, everything was fine (sort of) but the XBMC install with it’s subsequent Black Screen of Death, then my attempts to fix it, killed the bugger.  Computer doesn’t matter.  Cable doesn’t matter.  iReb doesn’t matter.  It’s dead.  Time to have a funeral.

For the record in case anyone else tries Robby’s trick thinking shsh blobs will magically appear, I’m hear to tell you it won’t work.

Jeez, imagine it not working.  Robby sure gave a ton of attitude for being WRONG.  As others have stated, if you have a non-jailbroken device, you don’t have any magically saved blobs.  This is what I was asking, and he kept repeating nonsense.  Too bad that others tried it and got stuck.

If you download Tinymbrella it has a function to kick the Apple Tv out of recovery mode.  There is also iReb, which has a function to restore the item if it is in a continuous auto boot loop.

Try both of these and then iTunes to restore it to stock 5.3 again.

It’ll likely work.

WOOHOO!  It worked!  I didn’t try this because I didn’t think TU was seeing it since it was only showing up as “Connected Device = 0”

I’ve done a tethered jailbreak with Seas0nPass, but can’t boot from Hubby’s install of Seas0npass on his PC because it keeps thinking I have 5.0.2 (unthethered) installed.  No idea what gives with that because I’m fine booting with my MBP.

By the way, does anyone know if the method mentioned here (http://forum.firecore.com/topic/7455) for restoring to a tethered 4.4.2 jailbreak without saved blobs really works?  I really hate 4.3x series and have two more of them to do today.  If it doesn’t work, I’d love to save the “trial-and-error-error-error-error” time just to have my efforts wasted.
