aTV doesn't update to 3.1

To those that are having issues, make sure you are running the installer under an Admin account on your Mac. Sorry this is not explained in the instructions, but it will be updated shortly.

I’m calling “Shananagens” this is really lame. Of course we are running as Admins. I’m paranoid as fuck, but even I run as an Admin in OS X. By the way has anyone tried to install 3.0 after they tried to install 3.1? Did it work?

Hoping For A Fix.

definitely not a admin issue. I even logged in as root because I got this message in the terminal as admin:

09.07.08 20:30:07 sudo[3570] andy : TTY=unknown ; PWD=/Applications ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/bin/cp -p /Volumes/OSBoot/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi /Volumes/Patchstick-root/
09.07.08 20:30:08 kernel cp[3570] Unable to quarantine `boot.efi’: 1
09.07.08 20:30:08 cp[3570] setting security information: (null): Operation not permitted

I think most users are running in Admin mode. I am. And this still doesn’t work. For those of us having problems, is there anything we can send you (ie: log files) that might help?

How long does it take to make a patchstick? I tried again last night after I posted and it look less than 5 seconds to create the patchstick with all plugins installed. Is it just me, or does this seem quick?

I really want this work. What’s the latest?

Thanks,
Rob

Ok. Do you have the File Vault, or any other security software enabled?

SUCCESS  I used my old ibook. On my MacBookPro I have SecuriKey installed. I don’t know if this is the problem but now it works. So maybe any additional security tools might be a issue. AppleCore thanks for the hint. So now the next challange is ahead with the recent AppleTV update. Havent tried it out and let this time other folks do the test

I’m on my Admin account and not running any security software. And it doesnt work anyway.

As I said before, I already tried in 3 different machines. And no joy.
(one of my machines has a blank admin password. this is a problem too since aTVFlash doesnt work for blank passwords)

Heres a log when creating the flash

The first thing that called my attention is the JVMArchs not found on the second line…

Then I decided to issue the commands manually

And found this:

NetoPro:~ neto$ diskutil partitionDisk /dev/disk5 1 GPTFormat HFS+ Patchstick-root 214M
Started partitioning on disk disk5

Password:
NetoPro:~ neto$ sudo -S cp -Rp ./root/BootLogo.png /Volumes/Patchstick-root/BootLogo.png
cp: ./root/BootLogo.png: No such file or directory

So…seems to me there is a path issue right

Hope it helps…here’s the whole log:

hi ,after installing your first “official” flash it has rendered my atv totally inoperable, frozen on sapphire ,the unit responds to the remote ,but does nothing .so i looked forward to your latest version ,thinking you might have come up with a fix .again RUBBISH .this is getting VERY BORING .please reimburse me with with the flash cost AND A NEW ATV,preferably with out any of your elusive “improvements” regards

I agree with bazz.

this is so frustrating.

I dont want my money back. I just need a decent way to make it work.

PLEASE do something about it.

I’d like to know why we’re paying for the privilege of being an alpha tester??? I’d gladly test the product and offer feedback, but making me PAY to do so seems, well, wrong.

We are sorry for the problems some of you are having. Honestly, most people are not having any issues, but there are a handful that are experiencing this same issue.

It seems to be related to the permissions, and the program not being able to copy certain files due to a permission restriction.

The following things can cause this to happen:

  1. Incorrect password
  2. Blank password set for account
  3. Running installer under something other than an Admin account
  4. File Vault security feature, or other security software enabled

Try the above fixes, and if you are still having issues please send an email through our website (http://www.applecorellc.com/contact.php) and we will do our best to resolve your problem.

Even though I’m pretty miffed by this whole experience, I will say that AppleCore has been very helpful and responsive so far. No success (yet), but definite effort. My comment is more general. None of these plugins seems very stable to me. Judging by what others have written and from my own limited experience with aTV Flash 2.2 on an AppleTV 2.0.2 system, I have yet to see much work as advertised. I think what you’re doing is awesome. But let’s be real. None of this stuff is even close to ready for prime time and we’re paying $50 a pop for it. For that I do expect the whole process to work a little better. That’s all.

AppleCore

As I said on my last email, I tried ALL your fixes, and no joy.

Then I try to issue the commands manually, using the Terminal

The problem doesnt seem to be related to permissions. Please check again my log on page 3. The return=1 errors on the log are File missing errors on the terminal.

I think it could be related with the version of OSBoot some of us downloaded.

Is it possible some of us downloaded an early or wrong version?

My AppleTV will not even boot!

I get the color logo, music and appleTV logo, but after that just looking at the ‘silver apple’ in the middle of the screen and no boot up!

This product does NOT work with version 2.2 of AppleTV update apparently! :frowning:

Mark

Factory restore and update of AppleTV to the latest 2.02 version does not work with ATV!

My AppleTV accepted the patchstick and it said that it applied it successfully, but now my AppleTV will not boot up and I can’t even do the factory restore!

I’m gonna have to call Apple to resolve this probably.

Mark

Make sure you reformat your flash drive before trying to install the new software onto it.

Also, a factory restore, and full update to the latest software is required.[/quote]

Sorry for the trouble.

Apple released a 2.1 software version early last week that is causing a few conflicts with our software.

Currently, installing a full 3.1 aTV Flash version on the Apple TV 2.1 software will cause the Apple TV to not boot up correctly.

We’re planning to release an updated version soon that will be fully compatible with the 2.1 version.

In the meantime, you can get your Apple TV back to normal be doing the following.

  1. Power on Apple TV
  2. As it starts up, hold down the minus and menu buttons for 6 seconds. This will restart the Apple TV in recovery mode.
  3. Select factory restore
  4. Once the Apple TV starts up, update software to latest version.

You CAN install the aTV Flash 3.1 on the 2.1 software, HOWEVER the nitoTV, Media Cloud and Couch Surfer plugins must be disabled.

Keep an eye out for the new version soon.

To those having an issue with the restricted symbol, and the aTV Flash not installing.

Make sure you are running the installer directly from the disk image. Do not copy it to your hard drive. The disk image contains vital information that is required for the installation to complete successfully.

That was it!

I successfully created the flashstick, and upgraded my AppleTV!

FYI, the creation time of the flashstick is about 45 seconds now (not 100% on the time), whereas before it was roughly 1-2 seconds - which seemed rather quick.

Great work. I am now going to spend my night uploading all the movies back to my aTV.

Thanks!
