Apple HDR Color Mode Bug on MacOS

I don’t like the lighter bias Infuse has in its HDR Mode and decided to switch to the Apple HDR Color mode, but I have noticed the colors are really inaccurate and get too dark. In some dark scenes, the screen gets very dark to the point where you cannot tell what is going on.

Steps to reproduce, explicit and numbered — screenshots imply it but spelling it out saves back-and-forth:

  1. Play [file] in Infuse, HDR Colours set to Apple

  2. Compare same frame in a different compatible app

  3. Note color/brightness mismatch

  4. Switch display profile to HDR Video (P3-ST 2084)

  5. Note colors now match, but at reduced peak brightness

This is in the normal Apple XDR P3-1600 Display Profile. What’s interesting is if I were to switch the display profile to the dedicated HDR P3-ST2084 profile, the colors are exactly the same but at the cost of a max brightness of 1000 nits which dulls the image by a lot.

This suggests the issue isn’t a general HDR/Dolby Vision decode problem, but something specific to how Infuse handles the adaptive 1600-nit tone-mapping curve used by the XDR profile. ST-2084 is a flat, fixed reference curve (1000 nits, no dynamic remapping), so Infuse rendering correctly there but not against the XDR profile’s dynamic curve points to the tone-mapping step itself as the likely source of the bug, not the underlying HDR/DV pipeline.
