I just purchased Infuse Pro (lifetime license). The app’s appearance is wonderful, playback of SDR and Dolby Vision content works flawless.
Unfortunately, I´m facing issues getting HDR-content (which is not Dolby Vision) to playback properly.
I´m using an Apple TV 4k (tvOS 26.2) connected to an LG G5 OLED. Dynamic content matching and framerate matching are enabled in the Apple TV. In Infuse´preview window, it shows “4K HDR” as part of the file (mkv):
Playing a file, the TV usually will pop up a short notification, if HDR or Dolby Vision content is displayed. Unfortunately, with Infuse Pro an HDR file is played in SDR.
Playing the same file with VidHub, HDR is properly displayed.
As a media server, the latest jellyfin server is used (direct play).
Hi together,
I checked a bit more in-depth with other test samples.
HDR videos in AV1 codec seem to be displayed as SDR on an Apple TV (4k), Dolby Vision test samples (in HEVC) are displayed correctly.
As I mentioned, VidHub is capable of displaying both codecs correctly.
Could it be, that Infuse is lacking HDR support in AV1 codecs?
True HDR output is not available for AV1 videos on the Apple TV, so Infuse will (correctly) set the output to SDR when playing these. Other apps may be switching your TV to HDR (or Dolby Vision) mode, but this is not technically correct.
The next gen Apple TV will presumably have hardware support for AV1 video which will allow us to have a native HDR/DoVi pipeline for these videos. This is already supported on devices which include hardware support for AV1 (such as newer iPhones, iPads, and Macs).
thank you so much for providing a profound answer to my issue. I guess this explains it.
Is the HDR → SDR conversion performed on software level accurate when playing AV1 HDR files on current Apple TVs? Meaning: is the image output compareable with an SDR version of the file? Or is there quite some interpretation of the tone mapping performed?
