I know VVC support has been suggested before, but that was almost a year ago and did not come with a concrete idea.
VVdeC is a software decoder for VVC that allows playback on devices without hardware support for VVC decoding, i.e. all Apple devices for now. Elmedia Player’s implementation of VVdeC is actually so efficient that when I play back 4K HDR VVC on my M3 MacBook Air, I only see about 3/8ths of my CPU utilized:
This convinces me that Infuse could also add support for software decoding VVC, which I hope they do soon because Elmedia Player is solely a Mac app and lacks the polish of Infuse. Real-time VVC decoding on Apple TV would probably be limited to something like 1080p SDR, but that would still be incredibly useful for transcoded FHD Blu-Ray discs, since VVC is even more efficient than AV1:
