About to update to 5.2, making sure first...

Hi there,

first of all, thanks for all the great work you’re doing!

I have a jailbroken ATV 2 running 5.0.2 and I’ve just read about the improvements in 5.2, so now I’m thinking about updating. First, I thought that was impossible, as 5.2 is not being signed by Apple anymore.

But when I went to “Manage Backups” in ATV Flash, I saw that apparently, the following signatures were saved automatically: 4.4.4, 5.0, 5.0.2, 5.0r1, 5.1 and 5.2.

After doing some research, I’ve come to the conclusion that I will be able to upgrade my ATV to a jailbroken 5.2 with Seas0nPass 0.9.2 using my Mac. Is that true?

If true, would you say the advantages of 5.2 are worth taking the risk associated with the update/jailbreak? I usually go with the “never touch a running system” philosophy, but that also led to my iPad being stuck on iOS 5…

I’m sorry if my question has already been answered, but I want to be 100% sure before I mess with the setup!

Thanks!

45 views and no quick “You’re good to go!” or “Nooooo! Don’t do it, your jailbreak has so much to live for!” ?

C’mon guys…

I was about to create a topic but then I saw yours !

Same as you, jailbroken ATV2 running 5.0.2. I want to update to 5.2 (not 5.2.1).

In my case, I don’t think I have saved signatures but I still have the ipsw I used to jailbreak my second ATV2. I don’t know if this helps…

Like you, I don’t want to make a bad move and be stucked with the thetered 5.2.1…

You should be OK, and as you have the saved lobs you can go to any of the releases you have blobs for. However all firmware updates have a level of associated risk, so I would only bother if there is some feature of the later firmware that you would find of use.

You will not be able to update to 5.2 unless you have the firmware signatures for that release on the ATV you are trying to update, so I think you are out of luck. Having the IPSW you created for a different ATV is of no use as the blobs are used at the restore stage.

Hmmm…I’ve never considered it all that risky to update/jailbreak…so long as you know what you’re doing.  Since you have your signatures saved, you can always update to the newer version and then downgrade if you don’t like it.  Losing your setups is a good reason for not updating, but installing xbmchub wizard is a good starting point imo.

If you’re running the latest jailbreak I don’t believe there’s much difference whether its on 5.0.2 or 5.2    Your question might be better answered in the non-jailbreak section.  Perhaps some bluetooth devices can be used on 5.1 and 5.2 that couldn’t be used on 5.0.2  I know the icons on the main screen can be moved around on 5.1 and later…hardly a reason to update though.   From my experience version 5.0.2 seems to run a bit quicker (on wireless) than any newer firmware versions, but I haven’t tested this.

Thanks for the answers!

I just updated, everything seems to work flawlessly and now that I can use my BT keyboard, the reconfiguration will be done in a jiffy!

Ok, I have 5.02 but dont have the shsh. So i downloaded seas0npass. When run seaso0npass I have to options, create IPSW and boot Tethered.  Use Create IPSW a started download AppleTv2,1_5.2.1_…   I dont want to change my version. I want the 5.02.  So what I’m doing wrong?

You might want the beta version of SeasonPass. This version has iFaith functionality built in which helps with managing shsh blobs.

You need to right-click “create IPSW” button, then choose 5.02
