8.4 Audio Level auto resetting to loud (macos)

I am having a problem I discovered while playing a movie softly last night (UI volume control dragged to low) - then whenever I interact with the onscreen controls like skip back the volume immediately jumps to full again, blasting the silence! If I click on the white dot of the volume control it again drops to the current (low) setting. But as soon as I skip again, bam, volume is suddenly full.

Bug or something I am doing wrong?

Built-in speakers, external, AirPods, etc.?

Speakers attached to Dell monitor - in turn USB 3 to Mac.

However I have just updated to 8.4.1 and its not happening any more! Hopefully fixed?

Gonna mark solved for now.

Oops. Spoke too soon there. I’m afraid this problem still exists. It became intermittent when using the mouse (skip forward/backward) on the onscreen controls but happens always when using the keyboard arrow keys to do the same. It’s a little annoying when watching at night alone with volume down for consideration of sleeping housemates now because it immediately jumps to full volume and depending on the movie scene…well you can imagine!

Which version of macOS are you using?

Can you try the new 8.4.2 update to see if this is still happening for you?

I am using 15.7.5 (24G624) on Intel Mac

I installed the update so this all with 8.4.2

The first video I played seemed to be OK and no volume increases (Mpeg AAC mp4)

The second was not OK and showed same symptoms in volume jumping ( EAC3 (A/52B) audio track 5.1)

The third video I tried (also EAC3 A/52B 5.1) did not show the symptoms (behaved as expected).

Quit app and tried again with all 3 videos - same result.

Unfortunately I have already deleted the two movies I was watching before that demonstrated the problem but I tried 4 other movie files and none displayed the symptoms! Went back to the file that did - still same result (see uploaded video).

So it seems isolated to particular video files?
